1. A cylindrical copper shell of length 300 mm, inside radius 50 mm and wall
thickness of 10 mm loses heat to the surrounding air which is maintained
at 25 oC. The inside surface of the shell is maintained at T1 = 100 oC. The
external heat transfer coefficient is h = 10 W/m2.K.
i. Determine the rate of heat loss to the ambient.

Suppose that an additional layer of material is coated onto the exterior of

the shell. Is the rate of heat loss increased or decreased by this additional
layer? Answer the following questions.
ii. If the thermal conductivity of the additional material is one-tenth that
of copper, plot the heat loss against the thickness of the additional
material for thickness in the range of 0.1 10 mm.
iii. If the additional material has a thickness of 1 mm, plot the heat loss
against thermal conductivity of the material for the thermal
conductivities in the range from one-tenth that of copper to 10 times
that of copper.

2. A furnace wall consisting of 250 mm of fire clay brick, 200 mm of kaolin,

and 100 mm outer layer of masonry brick is exposed to furnace gas at
1370 K with air at 300 K adjacent to the outside wall. The inside and
outside heat transfer coefficients are 115 and 23 W/m2.K respectively.
i. Determine the heat loss per m 2 and the temperature of the outside
wall surface under these conditions.
ii. If the outside temperature of the masonry brick cannot exceed 325 K,
by how much must the thickness of kaolin be adjusted to satisfy this
requirement?
