The Globe Theatre and Staging

of Shakespeares plays

About The Globe Theatre (NS)

- The son of James Burbage, Cuthbert Burbage, decided to take his father's
design and construct it in 1599.
- It is located in London, England in an area known as Bankside
- In 1613 burnt to the ground because roof fire during a play
- Rebuilt in 1614, but closed again in 1642
- To pay for reconstructed, lease was shared with 5 partners
- Modern reconstruction of Globe opened again in 1997 for good, located
about 750 feet from original site

- Those with cheapest payment, one penny,


simply stood in the courtyard in front of the
stage
- Two pennies provided the galleries from the
yard
- Three pennies would grant a two penny
gallery closest to stage in a box like seating
- Galleries had wooden seating

Hexagonal shape as the interior


Uncovered court measured approximately 55 feet
long
3 stories high, uncovered interior
Includes three semicircular galleries for audience,
holding more than 1500 people
Two primary sections to the staging of plays, outer
stage and inner stage
Tiering house is located behind the main stage, has
many roles

Young males usually had the responsibility of playing women's roles


Wardrobe was not selected based on being historically correct, rather
they provided the essential spectacle for the play
Stages were bare, with little to no props except ones needed for plot
Uncovered roof, forced the plays to take place during the day
Audience in the courtyard stood for the duration of the play
