Stem cells can become almost any cell and ths cell comes from two dfferent parts of the

body. The human tssues also known as adult stem cells and Embryos formed durng the

blastocyst phase of embryologcal development. Embryonc stem cells are derved from eggs

fertlzed n the laboratory, not n a woman's body. Embryonc stem cells, however, are lke

"starter cells" that can be coaxed nto becomng a varety of other types of cells. A bref lst of the

embryonc stem cells may someday be used to help nclude spnal cord, Parknson's dsease

Alzhemer's dsease, njures, skn burns, stroke , arthrts, brth defects, dabetes and heart

dsease. ln 1998, scentsts frst learned how to solate human embryonc stem cells. They were

developed for nfertlty purposes through n vtro fertlzaton. Human stem cells can also be

used to test new drugs and n medcal treatments that now requre organ donors. The need for

organ donors currently outweghs the avalable supply . Embryonc cells are undeveloped and

can be anythng. All stem cells can dvde and renew themselves, unspecalzed cells, gve rse to

specalzed cell types. Cells can sgnal each other by chemcals Embryonc stem cells and

somatc stem cells. The exctement was by the huge potental these cells have n curng human

dsease. The controversy centered on the moral mplcatons of destroyng human embryos.

Poltcal leaders began to debate over how to regulate and fund research nvolvng human

embryonc stem cells. The reason why l lke stem cell research s because stem cell research can

advance a vtal goal the search for new medcal treatments whle respectng the dgnty of human

lfe. At present, there are about 400,000 human embryos n the freezers of n vtro fertlzaton

clncs. Some actvst thnk ts bad because they compare the destructon of an embryo to an
aborton. They beleve that the embryo consttutes lfe because t has the potental to fully

develop nto a human beng.
