This course is for healthcare professionals who are responsible for performing,
recording and interpreting spirometry.

You will learn the necessary skills to conduct spirometric testing safely, effectively and
reliably and it will enable you to interpret results accurately. You will be able to assess
your patients with confidence and effectively manage their respiratory disease.
The module offers a professional qualification, full registration with ARTP on the
National Register* at Full level, access to eLearning, and no need to complete an
academic assignment as it does not earn degree credits. This course was developed
with ARTP and supported by BTS.

Delivery:
eLearning By the end of the module you will be able to:
Obtain technically acceptable measurements of dynamic lung volumes
supported by 1 interactive study
Recognise normal and abnormal patterns obtained from dynamic lung volumes,
day & 1 assessment day and identify errors in measurements
Assessment: Analyse the relationship between pathophysiological changes in the lung and
measurements obtained from dynamic lung volumes
Practical assessment day &
Define and explain common terms used in measuring dynamic lung volumes
submission of portfolio. Identify the essential pre-test requirements and correct patient testing techniques
Compare the key different types of spirometer available to perform dynamic
studies and be able to explain the main principles of their operation
Discuss the suitability of patients for dynamic lung volume assessment and
identify contra-indications to testing
Explain the rationale for regular cleaning and equipment maintenance and
identify correct methods for this

Please note: you will need unlimited access to spirometry equipment including a calibration syringe and
spirometer for regular use. You will need to able to show evidence of your ability to clean and disinfect the
equipment as well as have regular access to a range of patients on whom you will perform the tests.
