Figure 1-34 Cross-effect A- Balanced Rotor B - Unbalanced in right hand plane ¢- Unbalance added in left hand plane CROSS-EFFECT Two-plane balancing requires special attention because of “cross-effect". "Cross-effect", sometimes called "correction plane interference", can be defined as the effect on the unbalance indication at one end of a rotor caused by unbalance at the opposite end. Cross-effect can best be explained by assuming the rotor in Figure 1-34A is perfectly balanced. Adding an unbalance in| right correction plane, Figure 1-34B, results in a vibration reading at the right bearing of 5.0 mils @ 90°. At the left bearing a vibration of .66 mils is also noted with a phase of 300°. This vibration is due to cross-effect. That is, the vibrati at the left bearing is caused by the unbalance in the right correction plano. For our example, this vector will be drawn 8 major divisions in length to represent 8.0 mils at an angular position of 30° which was the new phase angle. Th ORIGINAL PLUS THE TRIAL WEIGHT vector is labeled "0 - " in Figure 1-31A. These two vectors, together with the kn amount of trial weight, are all that's needed to determine the fequired balance correction - both weight amount and locati 10 150 10s 5 MLS @ eo" 20 5 so 5 ms: OTs 8 MLS @ 30" "OTs B MLS @ 30" Figuro 1-31 The single-plane vector solution To solve the balancing problem, the next step is to draw a vector connecting the end of the "0" vector to the end of the + T" vector as illustrated in Figure 1-31B. This connecting vector is labeled "T" and represents the difference between vectors "0" and "0 + T" (0 + T)-(0) = T. Thus, vector "7 represents the effect of the trial weight alone. By measuring length of the "T" vector using the same scale used for "0" a “0 + T," the effect of the trial weight in terms of vibration amplitude is determined. For example, vector "T" in Figure 31B is 9.4 mils in length. This means that the trial weight added to the rotor produced an effect equal to 9.4 mils of vibration. This relationship can now be used fo determine hi much weight is required to be equivalent to the original un- balance, "0." The correct balance weight is found following formula: CORRECTION WEIGHT = TRIAL WEIGHT X 9 2 1-42 ACCEPTABLE STATIC UNBALANCE STATIC UNBALANCE oe me JZ? When turning, the rotor will be deflected in the two: loop form shown by the broken line. This type of unbalance is Corrected by putting equal weights in each wheel at the same radius and 180° apart. Pure couple unbalance of a flexible turbine or generator rotor, Figure 1-478, will cause the two-loop form of rotor deflection. The unbalances are 180° apart. The weight and eccentricity of one-half of the rotor is equal to the other half.
