Math Reflection-- March 7, 2017

In todays math lesson, students were introduced to the concept of area. I was a
little nervous about teaching this new concept to students because of the shortened day
(half day for parent teacher conferences), however Mrs. Shortreed reassured me that the
students would be fine as perimeter is easier to understand than area. With this, I
continued with the math unit and taught perimeter today.
To my surprise, students did an excellent job with finding the perimeter of the
shape. Students who usually only do 1 or 2 problems the whole math block (1 hour)
almost finished or were close to finishing the double sided worksheet I prepared for
them. With this, only a few mistakes were noted after students handed in their
worksheets and continued with other assignments.
Tomorrow, I plan to meet in math groups to make sure that all students
understand how to find the perimeter. Rather than meet in math groups today, I
decided it would be best if students were given ample time to work on the worksheet
after the perimeter mini-lesson. I am very pleased and excited to continue finding the
perimeter of rectangles tomorrow!
