Fallacy Discussion March 23rd, 2017

William Coskran

I do think that Jodie Foster's character made the fallacy of an Appeal To Ignorance. In suggesting that
the fact that there has been no concrete evidence of God's handiwork found as proof that he does not
exist, she commits the fallacy as the entire universe has not been explored and therefor it's impossible
to know. She commits the fallacy in using something intangible as proof and as such, it cannot be
proven as fact one way or the other.

An alternative route she could have taken to avoid this fallacy would be to show examples of how the
Earth and life as we know it could be created without Divine intervention. Further, she could argue
within the boundaries of known fact and science. Of course, it's impossible to disprove something
intangible, but sticking with tangible evidence would make her argument much stronger.
