Part 3: Response 1

Glass Sword is a breath-taking dramatic novel with romantic, complex, and heart-warming

family relationships. In this journal, I will be describing the relationship between Mare Barrow

and Calore Tiberias in Glass Sword, sequel to Red Queen.

Red Queen ended with Mare and Cal fighting their executioners in the Bowl of Bones. Glass

Sword started with Mare and Cal injured and bruised, but safe from the Bowl of Bones. Mare,

Cal, Farley, and other members of the Scarlet Guard were now in an undertrain-its destination

was Naercy. Naercy used to be Scarlet Guards home base. Outside, they heard missiles flying

and Evangeline and Ptolmus with their family leading silver fighters. All of that just to murder

Mare and Cal. Mare, Cal and the Scarlet Guard manage to escape in a submarine going to the

new home base of the Scarlet Guard-Tuck.

In Tuck, the Lakeland Colonel-Farleys father immediately puts Cal in chains and takes him to be

interrogated, hence him being a silver prince. Mare was frantically searching for Cal, since she

was worried of what might happen to him. Fortunately, Farley gave the key to Barracks 1, the

area where Cal was being held prisoner. Kilorn, Farley and Mare planned a rescue mission for

Cal, and it was a success. Shade (newblood), Mares older brother, teleported everyone onto the

Blackrun (a jet) where they would begin their quest for newbloods. Newbloods are not a silver, a

red, but both. They have red blood, but have powers greater than a silvers. Mare planned to

build a newblood army, before being betrayed by Maven. Now, she plans for this army to kill

Maven.
The significance of Cal and Mares relationship is that it allows Aveyard to incorporate a

message of never-letting-go in the novel. This may be because, Mare could have left Cal

prisoner in Tuck, but instead she and her friends executed a plan to save him. Mare had

established a hope of love for Cal in the previous novel, and didnt want to leave anywhere

without him. The romantic relationship between these characters will interest romance readers

like myself to continue reading the book.

Even though this is only the beginning of the novel, I am already too excited to discover and

encounter more mysteries and complicating, but surprising relationships.
