In the Place des Vosges Analysis

In his poem In the Place des Vosges, Wenthe uses metonymy as a literary device to

describe the moment of epiphany. While the man is reading a book in a park, the light shines on

his ring so he looks up and sees his wife that is sitting on the other side of the road. Ring is a

metonymy used for marriage and relationship. The ring, forgotten on my hand (line 5)

demonstrates that the relationship had been forgotten until the sunlight causes the ring to glow. It

emphasizes the moment of realization as he looks up and sees that his wife is sitting on the

opposite side; at the same time a blush of embers in the boughs refer to the love he feels for his

wife. Suddenly, the man starts to realize how much he loves her and how the love between them

had faded.
