Michael is taking a trip back home to South Africa. The total cost of the whole trip
is $1875. He spent 4 times the amount of money on his flight than on his 5 nights
in a hotel. How much was the flight? How much was his stay in the hotel?

y= hotel for 5 nights

Two Equations

x + y = 1875

x= 4y
Substitution Check

x + y = 1875 x = 4 (375)

x = 4y x = 1500

4y + y = 1875 x = 4 (375) 1500 + y = 1875

5y = 1875 x = 1500 y = 375

y= 375
Elimination Check

x + y = 1875 x + (375) = 1875

(-1 ) x = 4y (-1) x = 1500

x + y =1875

-x = 4y 1500 = 4y
