professionallyoccupiedinthetheoryandpracticeofreligion,
andwhothereforethoughtitsupremelyimportant,andrecorded
everythingrelatingtoit,andnotmuchelse
historyhadnomeaning,butbecausetheybelievedthatits
meaningwasimplicitandselfevident.

theinterpretationandtheselectionandorderingoffactsundergo
subtleandperhapspartlyunconsciouschanges,throughthe
reciprocalactionofoneortheother.Andthisreciprocalaction
alsoinvolvesreciprocitybetweenpresentandpast,sincethe
historianispartofthepresentandthefactsbelongtothepast.

Bothlanguageandenvironmenthelptodeterminethecharacter
ofhisthought
Thehistorian,then,isanindividualhumanbeing.Likeother
individuals,heisalsoasocialphenomenon,boththeproduct
andtheconsciousorunconsciousspokesmanofthesocietyto
whichhebelongs;
