Student Project Proposal
1. The question being researched through my experiment simply asks for an explanation of
the relationship or influence external frequencies in the form of noise possesses over
Duffing oscillations.
2. The product or outcome of the research will be a phase plot, or graphic representation of
the data gathered while working at the vibrations laboratory. This may be combined with
a model that simulates nonlinear motion.
3. In addition to the student and teacher, the intended audience for this project will be
STEM based students and engineers. Engineers will benefit from this work, as it
introduces new ideas surrounding the field of nonlinear dynamic and chaos theory.
4. Knowledge and ability in the field will be acquired by means of independent research and
lab work under the guidance of a graduate student and professor.
5. Most of the resources required for this project have already been acquired, as this
experiment is funded by the mechanical engineering department at the University of
Maryland. I will be using a shaker system, cantilevered beams, magnets, and accurate
data-measuring devices.
6. January-April 2017: Conduct and gather data by running experiment
April-Celebration of Excellence: Analysis of data and development of phase plot.
