A LITTLE ABOUT MY MENTOR

Mentors Background/Training
BS in Chemistry
MS in Organic Chemistry
Ph.D. in Botany
Postdoctoral training completed at
CHRISTUS Stehlin Foundation for
Cancer Research and The
University of Texas Medical Branch
(UTMB) from 2000-2003
Lily Cao and Yang Wang
LOCATION OF MENTORSHIP
Located at 17490 Highway 3
Suite B200 in Webster, TX 77598
Established in 2014 in
partnership with Singaporean
company NMT Pharmaceuticals
Small,private research facility
with a small staff
Focuseson cancer drug
development
WHAT IS MY PROJECT?
My project topic is current cancer treatment methods with a focus on
different therapy processes and more recent breakthroughs in
treatments. I decided to create fictitious patient diagnoses with
therapy and diet schedules as my supplementary product because its
a comprehensive demonstration of all the knowledge I have gathered
from research and mentorship. I chose to mentor in cancer research
because my father has worked passionately in this field for over 20
years, and I want to discover if its a passion of mine as well. I also excel
in the sciences in school and believe a career in cancer research may
be suitable for me.

WHAT IS CANCER?
Rapid growth of cells beyond their usual
boundaries
A multitude of diseases that affect various parts
of the body
Worldwide, there are about 14 million new cases
of cancer and 8.2 million cancer-related deaths
every year.
Changes in the cell result from interaction
between a persons genes and 3 external
agents.

MOST PREVALENT TYPES OF CANCER
Most common type of cancer is breast cancer (249,000 new breast cancer
patients expected next year)
Develops in men and women
Second most common type of cancer is lung cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer
Leading cause of death by cancer in America.
Stomach cancer is also called gastric cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in America after skin
cancer.
Symptoms are hard to detect and the cells grow slowly.

drugs or potential treatments.
on the market treating multiple cancers.
Whats mainly being tested or in practice:
Diet Control (cautionary measure)
Surgery
Anti-Cancer Therapies
Epigenetics

DIET CONTROL (CAUTIONARY MEASURE)

Food is constantly being researched as both a reducer and promoter of ones risk for
cancer
Foods that pose a risk
How diet can positively or negatively affect the body after a patient is diagnosed with
cancer
Foods that are good for consumption once diagnosed
Foods that are detrimental for consumption once diagnosed
What an average cancer patients diet schedule is like

SURGERY
Types of surgical procedures available in order to mitigate the effects of the
most prevalent forms of cancer

EPIGENETICS

samples. These models are used to
conceptualize how the drugs can target
Its the study of how gene expression is certain parts of the human genome and body.
manipulated without making changes to
essential underlying DNA.
Increased the probability of developing a
successful anti-cancer drug with efficacy in
treating multiple cancers
The importance: cancer researchers believe that
if they create drugs targeting the human
genome, certain forms of cancer can be cured
through medicine.

PRODUCT: FICTITIOUS PATIENT DIAGNOSES
WITH DIET AND THERAPY SCHEDULES

What: Documents with self-made patient profiles and an accurate diagnoses of

their conditions; provision of realistic diet and therapy schedules for the patients
Progress thus far:
Created 4 fictitious patient profiles
Created outline for diagnosis template with room for diet and therapy
schedule
Listed what still needs to be done to finish my product
PRODUCT-PATIENT PROFILES
Anna Dawson, age 42, stage 3 breast cancer, family members do not exhibit a
history with breast cancer, Caucasian
Travis Li, age 56, stage 4 small cell lung cancer, smoker, Asian American
Melinda Jimenez, age 77, stage 3 gastric cancer, worked as a chef at a restaurant
for 10 years (around a lot of smoke and ate lots of smoked foods), Hispanic
American
Howard Stanley, age 65, prostate cancer, relatives have had prostate cancer,
African American

PRODUCT-WHAT STILL NEEDS TO BE DONE
Elaborate on the four patient profiles and explain the importance of certain
characteristics
Fill out the diagnosis and schedule chart for all four patients
To create my final product, I still need to
Print the diagnoses
Get a professional portfolio organizing the patients files
Get a pen to attach to the folder
Come up with a fictitious hospital name and create a logo for the
diagnoses forms and the folder
Put all the materials together to finish the final collegiate-level product
CONCLUSION AND REVIEW
Purpose of project: to gather information on current cancer treatment
methods through research and my mentorship experiences
Supplementary fictitious patient diagnoses created to demonstrate
application of research and these experiences
Mentorship is an experience unlike any other.
Gave me an opportunity to explore a career field that interests me
through firsthand observations and experiences
My knowledge on what cancer is along with current and potential
developments in anti-cancer treatments is far beyond what I knew
before.
Being around a professional allowed me to observe how learned
information is applied to the real world.
SPECIAL APPRECIATION AND THANKS TO
My mentor, Mrs. Yang Wang, for giving me the opportunity to
learn about cancer and research protocol in a professional lab
setting
Mrs.Click for giving guidance on how to successfully
participate in a mentorship and teaching about safety and
professionalism in work settings
Mywonderful parents for constant encouragement and
support
My two evaluators, Mr./Mrs. So and So and Mr./Mrs. So and So
