Developmental domain lesson plan and assessment:

Content Area or Developmental Focus: Gross Motor Skills

Age/Grade of Children: Twos and three year olds
Length of Lesson: 15 minutes
Goal To have children develop their balance skills

Objective Children will be able to use their body to help them balance
Standards Included California preschool learning foundations-Physical development-balance and
locomoter skills- Walk with balance, not always stable, oppositional arm
movements still developing, and relatively wide base of support (space
between feet).

Materials
Unsteady surfaces such as a sidewalk stoop or playground balance beam

Introduction I will introduce the activity by having all children sit outside and see me
demonstrate balancing on the stoop and I will use a reward of a sticker or
small toy to encourage them to try this activity one by one.

Lesson Development First the child will stand on the start of the stoop with both feet, which are only
inches from the actual floor. As the child begins to take steps he or she must
begin walking with one foot in front of the other while keeping their bodies
balanced so they dont lose their balance and fall to the side. Children will
have to sway their bodies side to side in order to keep their balance in case
they begin to lose that balance.
Differentiation As children learn balance there will be some who will struggle with it so those
who do struggle can have more time to try the activity and they may get extra
tries.
Assessment I will supervise children as they show me what it is they have to do in order to
(Practice/ Checking for balance. I will not have any input when a child tells me what do I do next I
Understanding) will simply say its your turn to show me, Im going to watch to see what you
learned. So I will evaluate and assess a child as they show me how they can
balance.

Closing I will gather all the children into a group and have each child tell me how they
feel they did on their balancing and we will all bring positivity for each other
to encourage us to keep trying to learn to balance.
