"Spacemusic inspired by the sound and spirit of India" Tracklist Indian music seems to cycle in and out of popularity in the west. The last time it peaked was over twenty years ago. Led by the Beatles, many musicians in the U .S. and Europe became fascinated by the elaborate rhythms and exotic tunings of this very different sounding world of music. Most of them didn't become players of classical Indian music that can take a lifetime but they did adapt some of th e instruments and stylistic elements of Indian music, into their own creations. On this program, we'll hear music from New Zealand by DAVID PARSONS, from German y by KLAUS SCHULZE, and from the U.S. by TONY SCOTT, DAVID and AMANDA HUGHES, an d STEPHEN COUGHLIN. Indian instruments like the sitar, the sarod, the tamboura, and the bansuri flute combine with Western zithers, clarinets and synthesizers. We begin with RAVI SHANKAR's music from the film GANDHI. The program title is borrowed, with much affection, from French film maker Louis Malle's classic documentary series": PHANTOM INDIA on this hour of Hearts of Sp ace.
