VORWORT Die 6. November hielt Jewgeni A. Mrawinski die fer- tige Partitur-Reinschrift in Handen. PREFACE Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his 6th Symphony in the summer and autumn of 1939. During the previous twelve month he had been preoccupied with film music, and the study of a new genre, that of chamber music. He composed his serene, spring-like 1st String Quartet. At divers interviews given during 1938 the composer further made several references to a plan for a large-scale symphony for soloists, chorus and orchestra, which was to be dedicated to the memory of Lenin. He did not complete this work. Instead,in ~ April 1939, he began work on his 6th Symphony. Atan interview at the end of August 1939 Shostakovich described this music as being largely of a contemplative, lyrical character. He wanted this Symphony, he said, to convey moods associated with the ideas of spring, joy and youth. At theend of October the Symphony was finished, and on N ovember 2 the fair copy of the score was rea- dy and in the hands of Yevgeni A. Mravinsky. The first performance was given under the latter's direc- tion only a few days later, on November 5, by the Academic Symphony Orchestra in the Auditorium Major of the Leningrad Philharmonic Society. The score appeared in printin 1941. The autograph score is now apparently lost. The Central State Glinka Museum of Musical Culture has only an autograph arrangement of the first movement, for two pianos. The present edition is based on a manuscript score, bearing the editor’s handwritten notes and the com- set's Own corrections, which is preserved at the Central State Archives of Literature and Art of the S.S.R.; further, on the editions which appeared during Shostakovich’s lifetime, including, apart from the 1941 edition, the revised edition of 1962 which is itself not free from errors. These have here been cor- rected without comment. Editorial additions are given in square brackets. op. 54 , Op. 7 ? Dmitri Schostakowitsch.
