A few caveats:
1) I went through my old files and simply grabbed chunks of different quizzes and tests
to give you a sense of some of the different formats that are possible.
2) I used lots of formative assessment with my students (activities that we did in class
such as journal or story writing, dialogues, skits, or mini-projects) as well as lots of
performance-based assessment. I used those to assess their ability to actually use
the grammar and vocabulary to accomplish various objectives. However, I did find
that some students needed the "threat" of regular vocabulary quizzes to motivate
them to study vocabulary on a regular basis. Consequently, most of what you'll find
below are vocabulary-based quizzes. Because we did so much work with writing
and other kinds of project-based assessments, I designed the vocabulary quizzes to
be easy to grade (remember I had anywhere from 150 to 200 students in a given
year). I also gave students practice opportunities with these formats prior to the
quizzes (so if I am asking them to draw things, we had done small group or whole
class work that also required drawing). If I asked them to choose opposites, or list
synonyms, or complete sentences, then I made sure to include those kinds of items
in their warm-up/bell-ringer exercises each day.
3) I did give paper and pencil chapter/unit tests from time to timeespecially in the
lower levels. However, I generally cut and pasted them from the quizzes and tests
provided by the textbook publishers (since everyone in the district was supposed to
be using the same textbook and the students often had schedule changes at
semester that forced them to switch teachers mid-year, I thought it was important for
them to have exposure to those tests).
4) The quizzes near the top of this document are mostly for level I students. Those
near the bottom are more for levels II and above. I also included some examples of
listening scripts near the bottom.
