Moral Value :
1. We should be a humble person
King Arthur kept Excalibur as the chiefest treasure of all his possessions. For he said
to himself, Such a sword as this is fit for a king above other kings and a lord above
other lords. Now, as God hath seen fit for to intrust that sword into my keeping in so
marvellous a manner as fell about, so must He mean that I am to be His servant for to do
unusual things. Wherefore I will treasure this noble weapon not more for its excellent
worth than because it shall be unto me as a sign of those great things that God, in His
mercy, hath evidently ordained for me to perform for to do Him service. (Page 76)
King Arthur got Excalibur, a famous and great sword which could overcome any
enemies. With it, King Arthur could become an unbeatable king who conquers the world.
But King Arthur kept Excalibur in a strong chest wrapped with many locks and said that
he would never use it again except in serious battle. He believed that he had been trusted
by God with Excalibur so he could protect and serve his people, not to dominate them.
When we receive something good, we often forget to be grateful and become arrogant.
We think all of that happen because of our own ability. We should realize that everything,
be it good or bad, come from God and He want us to use it for good things. Since God
has given His bless for us, we should show Him our gratitude by being humble and serve
Him.
Then King Arthur looked upon Vivien with great displeasure, and he said, Damsel,
thou hast a cruel heart! Thou thyself hast suffered no injury at the hand of Queen
Morgana; wherefore, then, wouldst thou have me slay her? Now, but for all thou hast
done for me I would be very much affronted with thee. As for her, I forgive her all of this,
and I shall forgive her again and again and yet again if she sin against me. For her
mother was my mother, and the blood which flow in her veins and in my veins cometh
from the same fountainhead, wherefore I will do no evil thing against her. Let us return
again whence we came. (Page 196)
King Arthur had been betrayed by his sister, Queen Morgana le Fay, who felt affronted
because his son was not chosen by King Arthur to be a member of the Knights of the
Round Table. Queen Morgana had done many nasty things to him that includes the death
of Merlin the Wise, his advisor, and the disappearance of Excalibur sheath. She even stole
Excalibur and switched it with a fake one which caused King Arthur to become gravely
injured in a battle. In the end, with King Arthur forgive all of Queen Morgana mistakes
and proclaimed that he would always forgive her.
We should follow King Arthur example of forgiving other people. When someone makes
a mistake, we should learn to forgive them and not let it bother us. Even when somebody
harms us on purpose, we have to forgive them because if we mad at them and seek
revenge we will create another problem and hurt ourselves. God has teach us to forgive
those who trespass against us so we have to undertake that teaching.
Now when that old woman beheld Sir Pellias and Parcenet and the three pages
approaching where she sat, she cried out in a loud voice, Sir, wilt thou not bear me over
this water upon thy horse? For, lo! I am very old and feeble and may not cross this river
by myself.
Then Parcenet rebuked the old woman, saying, Peace, be still! Who art thou to
ask this noble knight for to do thee such service as that?
Then Sir Pellias was not pleased with Parcenet, wherefore he said, Damsel, thou
dost not speak properly in this matter, for that which beseemeth a true knight is to give
succor unto anyone soever who needeth his aid. For King Arthur is the perfect looking-
glass for knighthood, and he hath taught his knights to give succor unto all who ask
succor of them, without regarding their condition. So saying Sir Pellias dismounted
from his horse and lifted the old woman up upon the saddle thereof. (Page 206)
Sir Pellias had shown us his knightliness by helping an old woman to cross the river. He
did not turn down the old woman request because he was a noble knight and she was a
commoner and had a very woful appearance. He was upset when Parcenet scold the old
woman because of her status. Sir Pellias had been taught by King Arthur to always help
people who are troubled regardless of their condition and he had implemented it well.
When we see someone who has trouble we should help them whatever the
circumstances, whether they are poor, disabled, sick, or someone whom we hate. We
should not feel superior to them and decide not to help them because we think that they
are not worthy of our attention. If we help each other unconditionally, be assured that we
will feel delighted and the world will be a better place for us to live.
Character List
Ishmael - The narrator, and a junior member of the crew of the Pequod.
Ishmael doesnt play a major role in the events of the novel, but much of the
narrative is taken up by his eloquent, verbose, and extravagant discourse on
whales and whaling.
Ahab - The egomaniacal captain of the Pequod. Ahab lost his leg to Moby
Dick. He is single-minded in his pursuit of the whale, using a mixture of
charisma and terror to persuade his crew to join him. As a captain, he is
dictatorial but not unfair. At moments he shows a compassionate side, caring
for the insane Pip and musing on his wife and child back in Nantucket.
Moby Dick - The great white sperm whale. Moby Dick, also referred to as
the White Whale, is an infamous and dangerous threat to seamen, considered
by Ahab the incarnation of evil and a fated nemesis.
Stubb - The second mate of the Pequod. Stubb, chiefly characterized by his
mischievous good humor, is easygoing and popular. He proves a bit of a
nihilist, always trusting in fate and refusing to assign too much significance to
anything.
Flask - A native of Tisbury on Marthas Vineyard and the third mate of the
Pequod. Short and stocky, Flask has a confrontational attitude and no
reverence for anything. His stature has earned him the nickname King-Post,
because he resembles a certain type of short, square timber.
Pip - A young black boy who fills the role of a cabin boy or jester on the
Pequod. Pip has a minimal role in the beginning of the narrative but becomes
important when he goes insane after being left to drift alone in the sea for
some time. Like the fools in Shakespeares plays, he is half idiot and half
prophet, often perceiving things that others dont.
Fedallah - A strange, oriental old Parsee (Persian fire-worshipper) whom
Ahab has brought on board unbeknownst to most of the crew. Fedallah has a
very striking appearance: around his head is a turban made from his own
hair, and he wears a black Chinese jacket and pants. He is an almost
supernaturally skilled hunter and also serves as a prophet to Ahab. Fedallah
keeps his distance from the rest of the crew, who for their part view him with
unease.
Father Mapple - A former whaleman and now the preacher in the New
Bedford Whalemans Chapel. Father Mapple delivers a sermon on Jonah and
the whale in which he uses the Bible to address the whalemens lives.
Learned but also experienced, he is an example of someone whose trials
have led him toward God rather than bitterness or revenge.
Captain Boomer - The jovial captain of the English whaling ship the Samuel
Enderby. Boomer lost his arm in an accident involving Moby Dick. Unlike
Ahab, Boomer is glad to have escaped with his life, and he sees further
pursuit of the whale as madness. He is a foil for Ahab, as the two men react
in different ways to a similar experience.
Gabriel - A sailor aboard the Jeroboam. Part of a Shaker sect, Gabriel has
prophesied that Moby Dick is the incarnation of the Shaker god and that any
attempts to harm him will result in disaster. His prophecies have been borne
out by the death of the Jeroboams mate in a whale hunt and the plague that
rages aboard the ship.

Themes:
1. Environmental Pollution
Men are willing to destroy our mother nature for more money and power. The factories,
cars, and other vehicles release poisonous gas and substances like mercury. This pollutes
the lake and the flora and fauna in it.
2. Destruction of nature.
Nature has flora and fauna. They affect one another. When the lake gets polluted, the fish
that lives in it will get poisoned. When the birds eat the fishes, the birds get poisoned.
Also, if the wind is polluted, it brings the poisonous gas everywhere; all plants will
wither and die. In the end, it destroys our mother nature.
Moral Values:
News Break
In the first stanza, the parent is wondering why his childs behaviour is suddenly so
loving. The child even gives a kiss to the parent and the parent is bewildered that the child
offers help. The parent desperately wants to know the reason for the sudden change.
In the second stanza, the parent is surprised to see the childs face neat and tidy. The
childs clothes are also neat as if it has been ironed and has no crumples. The parent is
also shocked to know that the child did not spend his money for lunch that day as he
usually does. The parent is astonished with all the surprises that he is getting and thinks
when it would all end.
In the next stanza or stanza 3, the parent is surprised that his child did not drop his school
books as he returns home. The child does not scream or show an outburst of anger. The
parent praises the child for his good behaviour that day as the child acts like a gentle
lamb when just the previous day, the child was going against his parent.
In stanza 4, the parent feels as if the child is a stranger to him like a new person.
The child does not show any anger or any emotional disturbance. Therefore, the parent
asks the child to come closer so that he can see his child better as he wonders if that is
really his child.
That brings us to the last stanza, stanza five, where he also wonders whether his child had
been struck by lightning or injured during sports that has made him temporarily unable to
react. Finally, he understands the real reason for the change as he noticed that the child
has brought his school progress report.
Point Of View
Setting
Honesty is the best policy We should be honest with our parents. We must tell them
the truth so that we can gain respect and trust from them. Without trust, life would be
miserable. Parents will become suspicious in everything we do. This would lead to
arguments and lack of trust. It is more effective if the child behaves in honest and
productive ways. Learning to be honest and eliminating the need for lies can help to clean
up ones conscience and his relationship with others
Moral Value
Honesty It is a very important virtue. Speak from your heart and tell the truth. Do not
be bothered even though it would make you feel bad. People respect honesty, even when
the truth is uncomfortable.
Tone
The persona is surprised and astonished with the childs behaviour. The poem creates a
reflective mood as the persona compares the childs past and present behaviour. Overall,
it is light-hearted and a little humorous.
Metaphors
The poet uses metaphor to describe the behaviour of the child. Today youre a lamb
which shows innocence and obedience when the child is compared to a lamb; and Where
yesterday a rebel which shows disobedience and defiance when the child is said to be a
rebel (lines 11 and 12)
The poem consists of 5 stanzas with four lines and the rhyme scheme is a, b, c, b. The
style is simple and direct. The language and choice of words used is easy to understand as
we can relate it to what a child does.
The Title
News Break means reporting something that is unusual. The title is used to indicate that
the boy is doing something unusual by showing a change in his behaviour.
DISCUSSION
The words News Break are usually associated to important events in ones life. In this
poem, the child is afraid to tell the parent about his result. Instead of telling the parent, he
started to behave differently by being nice to make up to the bad news. The child realises
that his report card may not please the parent. Hence, he tries to be extra nice so that the
parent will not be angry. The poem demonstrates what a small child has to do just to
please his parents before the parents take any action against him. He also tells us the fear
he is undergoing when things do not turn out as they are supposed to. The poet has
observed the trauma a child faces before he hands over his progress report to his parents.
The job of the poet is to voice the actions of the small child to gain credit from his
parents so that there would be no shelling from their parents.
Heroic Thinking
7. Do you think "My Hero" is a good title for this poem? Why or why not?
= Yes. Because father is the role-model for every kids
Stanza 1
The persona is very proud of his father who he feels is as brave as any other father or
even braver. In his eyes, his father is Number One as his father is fearless and not afraid
of the dead of night and anything unddr the sun.
Stanza 2
The persona says his father is not afraid to watch horror movies late in the night. Horror
scenes of skeletons do not scare him or put him off watching them.
Stanza 3
The persona is positive his father is not afraid of ghosts and would even smile and
acknowledge them. His father dares to fight agains things that most other dads are afraid
of.
Stanza 4
The persona's father will not be intimidates by horror figures like vampires, wolf-man or
Frankeistein's monster even if they appear at the door.
Stanza 5
The persona says his father is as brave as a father can be and he's always keen to show it.
But when his father sees a spider, he will not touch it and mother has to come to his aid.
This is something the persona cannot understand about his brave father. is he really afraid
of a mere spider ?
Synopsis
The persona feels his father is very brave and is not afraid of any time of the day and
anything in the world. He rates his father who watches horror movies late at night is not
put off by any horror scenes or fearful skeletons. If any ghost appears in front of his
father , he will either greet them of fight them off. Horror figures, big or small, ugly or
scary looking do not give him the creeps even if they appear at his door. However, the
persona's father or his hero has a weakness - He has a fear of spider.
