Philosophy of Nursing Statement

My philosophy of nursing aims to provide nonjudgmental treatment of both the body and

the person, for I believe you cannot treat one without the other. This involves treatment of a

disease, patient empowerment and support, and constant learning.

In nursing, we see all the states a body can be in; as nurses it is our purpose to provide

exemplary treatment of the body and decrease the state of any disease. We aim to improve

quality of life through holistic and collaborative approaches in medicine. As nurses, we use our

skills, judgments and knowledge to give the best care, treat disease, and improve the health status

of all patients. Nurses should follow the nursing process, standards of practice, and ethical

decision making to treat any patient.

However, we cannot truly treat the body without knowing the person. As nurses we

actively listen, establish rapport, advocate, and educate. Through this, nurses get to know

patients, empower patients, and stand up for their patients beliefs, even if it is not their own. It is

the responsibility of the nurse to give this type of individualized care with every patient. With

patients as active team member, nurses then provide true patient-centered care that will result in

greater healing and patient satisfaction.

In order to maintain excellent patient care, nurses have a commitment to learning. Every

day, medicine changes, treatments are made, and new methods are produced. Therefore, nursing

knowledge and skills must be kept up to date in order to effectively and safely treat patients. By

using evidence-based practice, nurses will better their practice and prevent harm. Nursing should

never remain stagnant, for it is new evidence-based information that makes us better. As nurses,

it is our responsibility to always treat and always care about those around us.
