Kindergarten Dental Hygiene Lesson

TITLE: Bright, Strong, Healthy Smiles

ASSESSMENT: The audiences is a kindergarten class consisting of boys and girls

ages five and six. The children are mostly Caucasian and live in the Ankeny area. The
children are at the beginning level of reading and are being introduced to new
vocabulary daily. They have basic understanding about their oral health such as
brushing two times daily but may struggle with concepts of why they are supposed to do
this. They have a basic understanding of good overall health such as exercising and
eating healthy, but may lack in understanding what specific foods qualify as healthy all
the time choices and foods that should be limited to every once in a while food.

This age group of children are starting to loose teeth and get their permanent
ones. It is important that they understand what permanent means, how important those
permanent teeth are to them and understand how to take care of those permanent teeth
to prevent cavities from forming.

This is a one session lesson that is set up to take approximately thirty to forty-five
minutes. The rooms setting is large, with clusters of desks in half the room, a large
quiet carpet that all the children can fit on, and a large open space by the children's
cubbies. Located in the center of each cluster of desks are art supplies such as colored
pencils, pencils, rulers and crayons. There is a large white board at the front of the room
and a white board easel by the carpet.

Mrs.Walters class has 23 students. She is currently on maternity leave and has
substitute teacher. Mrs. Walters will most likely still be on leave on the day of the
presentation. Mrs. Walters class is located at Prairie Trail Elementary School, 1850 SW
College Ave, Ankeny, IA 50023. There is parking in front of the building and street
parking all around the building. There is a button by the main entrance of the school that
must be pressed to let the front office know someone is wanting to enter the school.
Once that person is let into the school they will enter the first set of double doors. Once
inside the doors there is a single door on the left that may be entered. This door is the
door to the front office. There the visitor will need to show a valid ID and get a guest
sticker.

.

INSTRUCTIONAL SET:

Good morning friends, how are you all doing? My name is Shalene and I am
going to college to be a Dental hygienist. Do any of you know what a dental hygienist
does? (child answers) You are so right! A dental hygienist works at a dental office. My
job will be to clean people's teeth and educate them on how to take care of their
mouths. By raising your hands show me how many of you have ever visited a dentist
before? Wow almost all of you that is GREAT!!! Today we are going to talk about our
teeth and ways we can take care of them and keep them healthy. I have another
question for you boys and girls. When you know the answer quietly raise your hand and
i will call on the quietest listener to share with the class. My question for you is... Who
can tell me one way you can help keep your teeth bright strong or healthy? (Call on
students, ask their name, ask them to share their answer) Those are all such great
ideas. I can already tell my new friends are very smart!

LESSON BODY & METHODS:

Who knows how many teeth does a brand new baby have? -None, zero

What do babies drink? - Milk

So do babies need any teeth to eat? - No

No they don't but we do don't we.

How many teeth do you think a child has? Take answers get them to the right
number 20

Well do you all have exactly 20 teeth? Allow them to answer.

Are you sure you have 20 teeth?

Who will volunteer to come up here with me and allow me to count your teeth?
(Choose a few students look for students with maybe some permanent ones coming in
and or missing front teeth.)

Have the chosen students come up open wide and count their teeth. Say WOW
you have 22 teeth, or Wow you only have 19 teeth or however many the child really
has.

Ask the child with 22 teeth why do you have more than 20 teeth?

Ask the child with 19 teeth why do you only have 19 teeth?

Have the children sit down and explain

When you are a baby your teeth are already starting to form. All of a sudden your teeth
start come up through your gums. The teeth that are coming in on a baby are the 1st set
of teeth you get as a child. Everybody gets 20 of these first set of teeth. These teeth are
called your Primary teeth or baby teeth. As most of you know those teeth get wiggly and
fall out. That's why some of you are missing your teeth.
Raise your hand if you have lost a tooth. Most of you have!

Once your baby teeth fall out your 2nd set of teeth start to come in. This set of teeth are
your forever teeth or your adult teeth. You have 32 adult teeth. They are bigger and
stronger than your baby teeth. These are the 32 teeth that are going to last you the rest
of your life, IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM!

Our teeth are so important to keep our whole lives. Our teeth do lots of things for
us. Who can raise their hand quietly and tell me why our teeth are so important? And
what do we use our teeth for? Call on children and allow them to share- Eating, Talking,
And Smiling.

Now that we have learned about our two sets of teeth, our baby teeth and
permanent teeth. And we have talked about how we use our teeth to eat talk and
smile. Who wants to play a game with me?

Can you all stand up and make a circle with me.

Now that we are all in this circle I want you to close your eyes and pretend with
me. I want you to imagine you are a baby tooth.

Repeat after me I am a baby tooth open your eyes

Now baby teeth it's time to eat. It's time for pizza so baby teeth lets tear a bite of
pizza our baby teeth wiggle, wiggle, wiggle. So we need to wiggle wiggle wiggle.

Wow that was a big bite now we need to chew chew chew. So let's jump up and
chew our food. Ready, Jump Jump Jump.

Wow that was yummy pizza. Eating that pizza made us Happy. Can our baby
teeth smile? Smile everyone. (go around circle and say things like oh my that baby tooth
has a great smile. Oh wow look at those beautiful teeth)

Well we are 6 now and I feel something underneath of me. Wow Im starting to
get all shaky are you shaking? Oh my we are all getting shaky what is going on oh
baby teeth do you see what I see? Look down Oh our permanent teeth are starting to
push us out. Look down and wave at the big strong permanent teeth coming in wave
at the permanent teeth below us.

Now close our eyes again and say out loud together I am no longer a baby
tooth now quietly go back to your spots on the carpet and have a seat.
Goal #2 & 3 Lesson plan

Now that we know how important our teeth are let's talk about what can happen to our
teeth if we don't take good care of them. How many of you have heard of the word
cavity?

Have any of you ever had a cavity?

Cavities are no fun to have. They can sometimes even hurt. A cavity is a weak hole in a
tooth. A hole that shouldn't be in a healthy tooth. This means our tooth is unhealthy. I
want to talk with you about how a cavity happens.

Tell story with story cards.

PICTURE #1 Germs are everywhere they make us sick that's why we wash our hands.
Well we have germs in our mouth. So, so, so many germs. Another name for germ is
bacteria. Can you all say BACTERIA IS ANOTHER NAME FOR GERM with me (3 x).
Great job! When we eat food gets stuck on our teeth. The bacteria like to stick to the
food and eat it. So our leftover food is stuck to our teeth and the bacteria is stuck to
them too. When this happens its called plaque.

When you and I eat food it makes us have to go to the bathroom right ha ha ah

When the bacteria eat the food that is left on our teeth they make acid.

PICTURE #2

This Acid burns a hole in our tooth. And creates a cavity.

Cavities make our teeth weak, and achy and can even make the rest of your body sick
too! Pretend to have toothache- hold face and frown (everyone)

PICTURE #3 Lucky if we get a cavity and we catch it before it makes our tooth too sick,
we can go to the Dentist and they can put a filling in our tooth. This filling heals our tooth
and makes it healthy again.

PICTURE #4 Bacteria eat what we eat. Do you like to eat sugary treats? Do you know
who else loves these types of treats? Bacteria do. So these types of foods should only
be eaten with a meal for like dessert. We shouldn't be eating them all the time for
snacks. Lets list off some foods in this picture that should be only eaten every once in a
while. (With children go through the foods)

Now i want you to turn to your friend sitting on the right side of you and whisper in their
ear 1 food not on this picture that we should only eat every once in a while (allow
students to whisper)

PICTURE #5 Here is a picture of some foods that actually help your teeth stay bright
strong and healthy. These foods we can eat for breakfast lunch dinner and any snack
time. Let's name these foods off together. Let's turn to your friend on the left side of you
and whisper one food not shown in the picture that would be a good any time food to
eat. (Allow students to whisper)

PICTURE #6 here is another way we can keep those bacteria from getting acid on our
teeth and making cavities. We can brush with toothpaste at least 2 times a day! When
we brush we get all the sticky food off our teeth so the bacteria don't have as much to
eat.

PICTURE # 7 Look at this picture. Who is this? -It's the dentist. Thats right.

It is so important to go to the dentists every 6 months. That is 2x a year. We go to the

dentist so they can make sure there are no cavities starting in your teeth. I want you all
to put your tongue on your back teeth and feel around. Raise your hand and when I call
on you tell me what you feel. (Call on students) - That's right it feels bumpy, smooth, like
there are little grooves. Those bumpy groovy areas are spots where plaque germs or
bacteria like to make cavities. So another thing the dentist can do is put sealants on
your teeth. Sealants are like fingernail polish for your teeth. They are tooth colored so
they blend right in and you can't hardly see them at all. Sealants help to help stop those
bacteria from being able to make a cavity in the grooves of our teeth.

Wow friends you have been such good listeners today. I am going to give you all one
tooth buck. I also want to give you the opportunity to win more tooth bucks so I think it's
time to see what you have learned with a review game.

I have a few questions for you when you know the answer raise your hand quietly. I will
choose the quietest listeners I see.

Question #1 who can give me 1 out of the 3 ways we discussed about things we can do
to prevent tooth decay or cavities? (Call on student give tooth buck) (Give Hints with
previous pictures if needed)
Question #2 who can give me another example of the 3 different things we can do to
prevent cavities? (Call on student and give a tooth buck -Brushing, eating healthy, going
to the Dentist)

Question # 3 who can give me the last example we talked about today, about things we
can do to prevent cavities. (call on student give tooth buck)

Question # 4 What is another name for germs? (Call on student give tooth buck-
Bacteria also except plaque just explain that plaque is a mixture of old sticky food and
bacteria)

Question # 5 What types of food do the germs in our mouth like to eat? -Junk food-
every once in a while food, candy, cookies, crackers, pop ex.

Question # 6 What do the germs make when they eat the junk food? -Acid

Question # 7 What does Acid do to our teeth? -Makes holes

Question # 8 What is it called when there is a hole made in our teeth from this germy
acid mix? -Cavity

Question # 9 Do cavities hurt? - Sometimes

Question # 10 Where do you go when you need a cavity fixed? - Dentist

GREAT Job now as a class can you tell me 3 ways we use our teeth raise your hands
quietly and give me one example. (give clues as needed and Give Tooth bucks out)

Now I want you all to stand quietly and listen to how to play our next review game for
another chance to win even more Tooth bucks!

RULES: I will ask a question and I want you to move to the correct side of the room
based on what you think the correct answer is. For example, if I asked how many
fingers do we have. If you think 3 go to the right side of the room if you think 5 go to the
left side of the room. (point to the sides of the room when giving the options)
How many primary or baby teeth do we have?

RIGHT - 100 LEFT - 20

How many permanent or adult teeth do we have?

RIGHT - 32LEFT - 22

What set of teeth do we lose or fall out?

RIGHT- Permanent/Adult Left- Primary/Baby teeth

What set of teeth do we keep for the rest of our lives?

RIGHT - Permanent/Adult LEFT- Primary/Baby teeth

How many Sets of teeth do we get all together in our lifetime?

RIGHT - 2LEFT - 5

How many times do you brush a day?

RIGHT - 5LEFT - 2

How many times a year should you visit the dentist?

RIGHT - 2LEFT - 5

Alright friends let's go back to our desks and do our last activity.

RULES: I want you to work by yourselves not with neighbors to make correct healthy
choices on the dentist maze. When you get through the maze i want you to quietly raise
your hand and i will bring you a TOOTH buck. Once everyone is done with the maze. I
want you to count your tooth bucks.

GIVE all children small prize, give the child with the most tooth bucks an additional
prize.

IF TIME ALLOWS

EXPERIMENT (2.1,2.2)
Reminder about mirrors being breakable, wash hands, pass out napkins, over
gloves to pass out food

At desks each student receives half of an Oreo cookie, chews it up and looks in
the mirror to see how dirty their teeth are (plaque), then each student chews up an
apple and looks in a mirror to see how crunchy fruits and vegetables (fibrous foods)
help clean their teeth

CLOSURE:

It was so nice meeting you all today thank you so much for having me today! I
hope you have enjoyed our time together and will remember to brush 2 times a day
make good healthy food choices and visit the Dentist two times a year. I look forward to
returning in February to talk about brushing and flossing to keep teeth clean. Thank you
for listening and being such good helpers today!

Prizes

Activity #1, group activity- have children draw a picture of a food product from the bag without
looking, the child will ask classmates yes or no questions trying to figure out what food they may
have. Once the child guesses they will pick another child to take their place continue with the
game. At the end of the game the children correctly place the food items as a all the time food
choice or a not all the time food choice.

Extra time activity # 2, Individual activity- Students will demonstrate their cognitive ability to
show they can decide if a food is a good everyday food or a once in a while food while. The
evidence of their knowledge is shown by the food maze they will fill out individually. They will
complete the maze by choosing good food choices which will lead them to the finish line.
