Box 30473 Lansing, MI 48909 RE: Opposition to Transport and Disposal of Radioactive Waste to Wayne County Dear Director Grether, In my capacity as Wayne County Executive, | am responsible for the health, safety and welfare of our 1.8 million residents. It is a responsibility that I do not take lightly. That being the case, | was deeply concerned upon learning of a proposal by the US Army Corp of Engineering to transport contaminated soils containing low level radioactive materials and hazardous metals from a site in Luckey, Ohio to Wayne County. To be clear, | am vehemently opposed to the transportation and disposing of any radioactive waste to Wayne County. It is undisputed that Wayne County residents have been disproportionally impacted by industrial pollution, which has a direct impact on the health and quality of life of Wayne County residents every day. Our concerns are not abstract as we see the effects daily. Many of the materials expected to be transported are known carcinogens and may cause significant health problems, including, but not limited to lung disease, respiratory and immune systems disorders and cancer. These concerns are heighted when considering that the receiving facility for these materials has been cited for numerous permit violations and subjected to fines for leaks and fires which pose actual threats to the public. The health, safety and welfare of Wayne County residents should not take a back seat to corporate interests. Our residents deserve better. In closing, | request that any information be forwarded to my office regarding this proposed dumping of radioactive waste you currently have in your possession and that you may acquire in the future. Further, | request that your Department look beyond mere compliance in its decision - making process and give great weight to the quality of life that all residents of Wayne County and the State of Michigan deserve and should expect their government to provide.
