students without proper authorization. Refer to the foreign disclosure memorandum
in the Security Annex of the Course Training Plan for further information.
1
OBJECTIVE

1c. Without reference, identify basic facts about solid

state device theory with at least 80% accuracy.
(4 out of 5)

2
OVERVIEW

1c. Identify basic facts about solid state devices

Solid State Relay (SSR)

4
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Solid State Relay (SSR)

Replaces mechanical relays on aircraft

No moving parts
Last longer

5
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Solid State Relay (SSR)
Primary/Secondary circuit
Optical coupler electrically isolates the primary
circuit from the secondary circuit
LED in the primary circuit, provides optical
coupling to a photodiode array
No voltage applied to the LED, the MOSFETs
are shut off (Enhancement MOSFET)

6
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Solid State Relay (SSR)

S1 closed voltage applied to LED and it

illuminates
Photo-sensitive diode array (PDA) produces a
voltage which turns ON the MOSFETs
Current flows in secondary circuit to turn on
the lamp

7
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Solid State Relay (SSR)

MOSFET cannot block current in both

directions
If secondary voltage is AC, two MOSFETS are
required

8
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Solid State Relay (SSR)
Advantages
No Mechanical moving parts
No contact materials which will wear out
Faster than electromechanical relays
Decreased electrical noise when switching
Longer operating life

9
Basic Facts About Solid State Devices
Solid State Relay (SSR)
Disadvantages
More expensive than normal relays
Restricted to single pole, normally open (NO)
configuration
