Reflection #4
This chapter in our Multicultural book discusses racism and biases towards those of
different races and ethnicities. This chapter (chapter 10) also discusses the differences between
frontstage racism and backstage racism. Frontstage racism is defined as when white people are
around people of color, they attempt to prove their tolerance by being extremely polite,
confirming they are in fact not racist by going out of their way to say hello to people of color.
Another way whites show frontstage racism is by avoiding strategies such as not mentioning
racial issues or anything that could be associated with racial issues, or even avoiding people of
color. Another way white people demonstrate frontstage racism is by defending themselves
against perceived threats or defending whites. Lastly, white people make racist jokes without
backs. Or that whites are blatantly racist towards others who are not white. Backstage racism
involves racist jokes, or making fun of someone who isnt white. It also involves how people
are raised to view others of color. As we grow, we take on the characteristics and views as our
parents or those who have a huge impact on our lives, and if those who we look up to are racist
or have racist tendencies, then more likely than not, children will take on those same traits and
views.
