1) Reality Modeling (General category) :
Project Statement:
Your community is preparing for future development projects. Help capture part of the
existing conditions, and produce a detailed and precise 3D model, to provide real-world context
for expansion projects.
Select an object or structure of interest that is outdoors and that you can view from a
perspective of 360 degrees, without any obstructions to your sight lines (such as a statue,
sculpture, or small structure). If you will be capturing photos from the ground, then we highly
recommend selecting something no more than 20 feet tall, so you can capture the entire top
surface without difficulty. Note: if you select a building, ensure that you will be able to
photograph it from a sufficient distance (unobstructed) to capture the entirety of the roof; flat-
roofed buildings should not be selected for this reason.
Take a series of photographs of the selected object, use ContextCapture to convert those
photos into a highly detailed 3D reality model, and compare measurements to ensure accuracy.

2. ContextCapture model file (.3MX format)
Judging Criteria:
Project Tasks:
1. Using a smartphone or a DSLR camera, take a series of photographs of the entire area of
interest, with minimum of 60% overlap between pictures. Use of a GPS-enabled camera
is highly recommended; most smart phones have this feature built in.
For tutorials:
b) Access On-Demand training via STUDENTserver, and also via our video library:
www.bentley.com/academic
1. QuickStart Using ContextCapture
2. Carefully measure and record the length of at least 3 segments of the object.
a) Perform Aero-Triangulation
4. Use Acute3D Viewer software to view the ContextCapture model. Use the Measure
Distance/Area/Volume tools, within the viewer, to estimate lengths, areas, or volumes
of some features in your object of interest. Check if the three distances measured
earlier, of the real object, are the same as those same distances in your 3D model. If not,
use corrective measures to recapture and/or regenerate the model so that the model
lengths match the distances in reality.
5. Import the .3MX model into MicroStation CONNECT Edition. Measure the three
distances again, in the model, to compare against the lengths you recorded of those
features in reality.
6. Create a high definition video, providing information about your team members and key
details about your project (see details under Submission Requirements). Be certain to
include information about the accuracy of your model, comparing original
measurements in real life, vs. the models measurements.

2) Structural Engineering Design (General Category):
Project Statement:
Your community is experiencing a commercial development boom. New businesses are eager
to construct exciting and attractive buildings that can also withstand the vertical and lateral
loads arising due to high occupancy. Design a commercial building that optimizes square
footage, given the intended use by tenants that you imagine, while being structurally sound and
in compliance with local building codes and other environmental considerations of the building
site.
Design a seven-story commercial building, using the modelling tools in STAAD.Pro. Assign the
required materials and support to your structure. Assign loads and design in accordance with
your home countrys design code standards. Analyze using suitable country codes, and check
your results in the output file. Make changes to your design, based upon analysis results, to
ensure structural optimization of your design.
Submission Requirements:

2. STAAD.Pro model file (.std format)
Judging Criteria:
Project Tasks:
1. Model a B+G+6 building (total of seven stories, plus basement) in STAAD.Pro, including a
staircase, with an area per floor of 1,000 sq. meters/11,000 sq. feet
1) Access On-Demand training via STUDENTserver, and also via our video library:
www.bentley.com/academic
2. Assign materials based upon your assumptions and location considerations (steel,
concrete, or composite materials, as you deem most appropriate for building sites in
your location)
3. Loads can be assigned depending on the structures requirement, per the standards of
your country
5. Analyze your structure and check the stability of the model in the post processing mode
a) Access On-Demand training via STUDENTserver, and also via our video library:
6. Adjust the design of your structure to meet your countrys design standards
7. Generate Reports based upon your results: output file and BOM using Take Off option
(from STAAD Pro)
9. Create a high definition video, providing information about your team members and key
details about your project (see details under Submission Requirements)

3) Innovation in Use Of Reality Modeling for Infrastructure (Advanced Category):
Project Statement:
You have a unique advantage, as a student. Your point of view on infrastructure solutions has
not been influenced by years of exposure to common practice. Therefore, we ask that you
apply your imagination to create an innovative application of ContextCapture technology,
using the reality model that you create as part of your solution to a real-world infrastructure
problem.
For the project to qualify for this competition, you must use ContextCapture as part of itand
clearly demonstrate that the output from ContextCapture adds value to your proposed
solution. After that, the only limitations are your imagination!
First, identify and describe an infrastructure problem you see today, in detail. (For example,
bridge inspection is difficult and time-consuming, and there are many safety issues for workers
involved in capturing necessary data, etc.)
Develop a potential solution to this problem, using reality modeling as a key element of that
solution. (For example, could a drone be used to capture pictures of the bridge, which when
transformed into a reality model would offer reliable information sufficient for inspection and
maintenance solutions?) The problem you are attempting to solve should be something you
www.bentley.com/academic
believe can be done better, faster, or become more automated by using reality modeling. You
may even propose something that no one is doing today, but that you feel will have an impact
on the way infrastructure is designed, built, or operated in the future.
Carefully think through the problem and proposed solution, and document all the issues you
may encounter (legal, technical, etc.). Propose remedies to those issues as part of your
solution, or discuss what may be possible or what must change in order to address those issues.
Try to think outside the box! If you have been working on a real-world infrastructure solution in
your lab, or have access to the equipment to start demonstrating your proposed solutionboth
safely and legally (especially if you are using UAVs)it may help enhance and distinguish your
project.
Finally, create a 5 to 10-minute video clip that clearly explains to viewers the problem you are
attempting to solve through creative use of reality modeling, and how your solution will
overcome difficulties and offer an improved option for future infrastructure projects.
Submission Requirements:
1. Acceptance of a 2017 Participation Agreement and completion of Submission Information,
including information about all team members
2. ContextCapture model file (.3MX format)
3. 5 to 10 minute HD video of your team (Resolution: 1080p HD, 1920x1080), briefly introducing
your team members (each persons name, area of study, and what year in the program at your
school). The majority of the video must provide a detailed explanation of the infrastructure
problem you are addressing, show your solution and how it best solves that problem, and how
ContextCapture contributes to your proposed solution. Note: you may shoot the video on a smart
phone; just be certain that you record in High Definition, in good lighting, and that the audio is
crisp and clear (and easily understood). Please record your commentary in English.
Judging Criteria:
Pervasiveness and/or difficulty of the infrastructure problem solved by using reality modeling.
(is this a common problem in the industry? Or one that will increasingly challenge infrastructure
practitioners in the future?)
Quality of your proposed solution (innovative, realistic, cost-efficient, etc.)
Methods used (models, reports, web or mobile applications, etc.) and demonstrated in your
solution, as shown in the video about your project.

or your choice, to proceed with the rest of your vision for using the reality model to solve this
infrastructure challenge.
