Converting an equation written in polar form to one written in rectangular

coordinates

Convert the polar equation to rectangular form.

r = 6 sin

Background:

To convert an equation in polar form to rectangular form, we can use the following
polar-rectangular relationships.

x = r cos and y = r sin

2 2 2 y
r = x +y and tan = x 0
x

The current problem:

We must convert r = 6 sin to rectangular form.

If we multiply both sides of the equation by r , we'll be able to use the relationships
2 2 2
r = x + y and y = r sin .

r = 6 sin
2
r = 6r sin Multiplying both sides by r
2 2 2 2 2
x + y = 6y Substituting x +y for r and y for r sin

The equation is now in rectangular form.

Here is the answer.

2 2
x + y = 6y
