Lesson or Project Topic
What is the topic? What is the title?
Dig into Polygons
Critical Question Addressed
What specific question(s) will be answered?
How will the perimeter of a rectangle change if each side of the rectangle is
doubled?
Lesson or Project Goals and Objectives
What will students experience and be able to do as a result of this lesson or project?
After the lesson on polygons using interactive whiteboard and websites, students of
6th grade will be able to draw polygons in a coordinate plane given coordinates for
the vertices; and find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate
or the same second coordinate, individually as well as in groups.
Curriculum Connections
What specific curriculum learning outcomes will be addressed in this lesson or project? (TAKS)
MAFS.6. G.1.3
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use
coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate
or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-
world and mathematical problems.

Technology Connections
What technology skills and/or goals will be addressed in this lesson or project?
Knowledge Constructor:
3c) Students curate information from digital sources using a variety of tools and
methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or
conclusions.
3d) Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems,
developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions.

Lesson or Unit Starter

What will you do to introduce the lesson or project? Are the connections to the curriculum and technology
clear?
Teacher starts a lesson by playing a warm up game on plotting points to check the
students prior knowledge on the topic. After the game, students watch a 3-minute
video on the concept of polygons. This is followed by the "question of the day" on
slide 3.
Student-focused Activities
What activities will your student do during this lesson or project
1) After warm up questions, there is direct instruction through interactive
whiteboard and PowerPoint (slide 4 to 11). (30 mins)
2) During demonstration students are given the vertices (coordinates) of polygons to
draw in the coordinate plane. They connect the points to form a polygon.
3) They are also taught how to find the length of the sides with same first or second
coordinate. If both x-coordinates are the same (2, -1) and (2, 4), students should
recognize that a vertical line has been created and the distance between these
coordinates is the length between -1 and 4, or 5 units. If both the y-coordinates are
the same (-5, 3) and (2, 3), the students recognize that a horizontal line has been
created and the distance between these coordinates is the length between -5 and 2, or
7 units. Using this understanding, student solve real-world and mathematical
problems, including finding the area and perimeter of geometric figures drawn on a
coordinate plane.
4) Students work on problems given on slide 12 and 13 in groups of 2. (20 mins)
5) After giving students 15- 20 minutes to work on the problems, answers are
discussed and method is reviewed.
6) Students are given links to websites (khan academy, learn zillion) for homework
and practice.
7) To help students explore more into this topic, they are assigned a project in groups
in which they must create a short Prezi or PowerPoint (3- 4 slides) presentation on
the uses of coordinate plane. They have a week to work on that project.
Resources
Hardware, Software, Web, CD ROM Other (Print, Human, etc.)
Microsoft PowerPoint, an internet Graph papers and drawing utensils
browser, Tablet or Desktop computer,
interactive whiteboard and interactive

Student Assessment
How will you assess the extent to which the students have achieved the goals and objectives?
1) Students give a short group quiz by answering questions on slide 15th through
17th.
2) Teacher use student response system (kahoot) for questions on last 2 slides (18 and
19)
3) For homework, students have to watch Khan academy tutorial and give correct
answers to at least three questions in a row to complete the activity.
4) Students group project will be graded based on rubric provided to students out of
a possible of 25 points.
Special Needs: Vision impairment
1) During demonstration, student has access to an iPad or tablet with the PowerPoint so
they can follow along through the lesson. Student will be able to enlarge the font size
and pictures on slides to his/ her comfort level.
ESOL Accommodation: Spanish Speaker
Khan Academy has the tutorial and practice problems on the lesson. ESOL
student will be able to change the language of instruction by changing the settings in
Khan academy and that will greatly help the student in learning the concept. For
group work, teacher will make the student work with a bilingual person (if available).
