PARTA:LastweekonFebruary24thIobservedthe3Aclassroomfrom11amto12pm,

sorightbeforelunch.AsIobserved,Inoticedtwolittleboysplayingonthecircletimecarpet

withblocksandconstructionuniforms.Oneboy,Mason,whoisanAfricanAmericanstudent,

askedtheotherlittleboy(whosenameIdidnotcatch)tostandontopoftheconstructionhelmet.

Theboysthenbegantakingturnsstandingonthehelmetandjumpingoffofitasifitwereabig

rock.Theythenbegantolightlypusheachotheroffofthehelmet,andwhentheyjumptheyhit

thefloorandrolled.Whentheywereonthefloortheywouldwouldrollallthewayacrossthe

carpetgigglingandexaggeratingthemselvesfallingonlytogetrightbackup,pushtheotheroff

thehelmet,andjumpoffagainthemselves.Alittlegirlstoodbyandwatched,andeventuallyshe

wantedtopartakeintheplay,butinsteadofjumpingoffthehelmetwiththeboysshedecidedto

sitonthehelmet.Theboysdidnotlikethisidea,sotheystartedtogetalittlerougherwhenplay

pushing.Theteacherthennoticedthisandtheplayframewasbrokenup.

PARTB:Watchingtheboysplaytheyusedthehelmetasapivotasitstoodfora

jumpingrocktothem.Thehelmetreplacedsomethingrealthattheydidnotactuallyobtain.They

createdrulesboundsbecausetheycreatedtheirownruleswiththehelmetandtheyknewnotto

pusheachothertoohard.Theyalsocreatedtheruleoftakingturnsontheirown.Whenthegirl

enteredtheplayframe,sheshowedegocentrismbecauseshewantedtositonthehelmetandthis

preventedtheboysfromtheirgame.Shedisplayedhowherenteringthegamemadetherules
centeraroundherandnoteveryone.Beforesheentered,theboysdisplayedintersubjectivityby

creatingtheirownworldwiththeirownrulesandconversationsthatexistedsolelybetweenthem

thatwasdisturbedwhensheenteredtheplayframe.Theboysshowedculturaldevelopmentby

usingthehelmettodevelopatool,thentheycreatedreasoningbetweenthetwoofthemtotake

turns.

PARTC:Ifeltthisplayframewasverysuccessfulbecausethetwoboysparticipatedin

roughandtumbleplay,buttheyhadsetboundariesandlimitationswhenpushingeachother.I

rememberparticipatinginplaylikethiswiththeboysinmyneighborhoodbecauseIhadnoone

elsetoplaywith.Theboyssetlimitationswithmebecausetheyknewtheycouldntpushmeas

hardastheydideachother,andthatcreatedsuccessfulplayframes.
