Community Assessment Reflection

This assignment was also interesting. Prior to attending this university, I had no

knowledge of Lumbee Indians or Pembroke, NC. So, I believe this assignment forced me to learn

more about this community and their history. I enjoyed this assignment because I was allowed to

become much more culturally competent, which is a huge factor when becoming a social worker.

I feel as though, the more culturally competent a person becomes, the more open they are, the

more they are able to understand themselves because it forces them to reflect on their own

cultural background, and it also allowed my biases and stereotypes to diminish. In doing this

paper and project, I will be able to take everything I learned and directly apply these skills once

in practice.
