Fulbright English Language Camp

The Tour of America English Language Camp was held in SMK Semerah
Padi today to expose Sarawak students to the various regions, cultures, and
geography of the United States where the Fulbright English Teaching Assistants
(ETA) are from. 150 students from 8 out of the 15 ETA schools took part in the
camp. The broader goal of this camp served as an introduction of the ETA's to
the state, the state to the ETA's, and start a productive year of English learning
experiences. The Fulbright ETA program in Malaysia is coordinated through the
Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange that sends 98 ETA's
across Malaysia to prompt cultural exchange and English language learning. In
Sarawak, there will be 15 ETA's in Kuching, Bau, Sri Aman, Kota Samarahan
placed in secondary schools. The goal is to promote cross-cultural exchange
through English language learning and contribute to improving English
proficiency in Sarawak. The principal of SMK Semerah Padi Puan Hadiah bt
Amit and her teachers gave a very warm welcome to the ETAs and their
mentors. She also thanked MACEE as well as JPN officers for having chosen
her school as the venue for the camp.
