INDIAN AGENT'S OFFICE,
Sir-
It I have the honour to submit herewith my Report
“a for the month of February.
HEALTH. quite a number of the Indians have suffered from
@ severe form of Grippe, which has been epidemic in
this districtjand it has been especially hard on any
who were at all inclined to twhercular trouble.
Tere were WeSs"births, ana four deaths;one of
the deaths was a week old child ;the other three were
young men who died from tuberculosis.
WORK, The Indians have been busy most of their time
hauling hay for their stock and looking after then;
they also hauled some firewood to the Towns and settle
ments;and a few of them were hunting muskrats, which
fur is now quite valuable,
aut Benet Grae
STOCK. | | With the exception of Thunderehild,Band;all the
other Cattle of the Agency are in splendid condition,
have plenty of Hay,and have sustained no losses.
on the Thunderchild Reserve however, I am sorry
to say that there have been a few losses: also one
Bull died on that Reserve the cause of sickness and
death being unknowm.
MISCELLANEOUS. The Weather was very cold and stormy throughout
the whole of the month;and there was quite a lot of
Snow fell toot
J.D, MeLEAN ESQ. One
ASSISTANT DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT GENE RAL
TEPARTMENT OF INDIAN AFFAIRS
OTTAWA.One of the deaths, above mentioned, was that of an
Industrial School boy,William Thomas, who was allowed
to go home to the Reserve for a short time before ne
died : this makes three deaths at the Indistrial
School curing the past month;and it is quite a heavy
death rate{the other two boys did not belong to our
Agency, Although the Industrial School is splenaid-
ly situated with regard to having a high dry ana
healthy site;yet the Building itself is placed in
such a position that nearly all the Sunlight is
excluded from the Class room and Dormitories, which fx
fact is very favorable for the propagation of the
germs of tuberculosis, I would respectfully suggest
that the Department should insist upon the Medical
Officer making,at least, a monthly examination of all
the Industrial School Pupilsjand upon the ia
of Consumption in a Child,it should be either, segrege
gated from the other Children,or discharged from the
Sehool,on account of being a menace to the lives of
the other Children,
Yours obediently
Indian Agent.
