ANALYSIS FOR INDIVIDUAL COMPOUNDS

Calcium Hypochlorite

Idometry is best method for determination of available chlorine present in the

compound. Cal Hypo is titrated against sodium thiosulphate to determine available
chlorine. Experiments were run for this method and it has matched the data given
by client.

Calcium Hydroxide

To determine the amount of Ca(OH)2 present in Cal Hypo it is titrated against HCl.
This method is the most accurate one to determine the amount of Ca(OH) 2titrations
were made for the same and it matched the data given by client.

Calcium Carbonate

To determine amount of CaCO3 present in the compound it is titrated against HCl

using methyl orange indicator. Titrations were made for the same and it has
matched the data given by client.

Calcium Chloride

Amount of CaCl2 present can be determined directly by gravimetric analysis.

However this method is time consuming and involves reagents like silver nitrate
which requires special care in handling them. Another alternative to determine the
amount of calcium chloride present is to find out total calcium present in the
compound. To find out total calcium present it is titrated against EDTA. Then
difference between total calcium and amount of calcium present as Calcium
Hypochlorite, Calcium Hydroxide, and Calcium Carbonate gives the amount of
Calcium Chloride present.
BRINES USED FOR VAM

Commonly used brines for vapor absorption machines are Lithium Bromide brine,
Sodium Chloride brine and Calcium Chloride brine. Calcium chloride is least
corrosive among these 3. Corrosion can be reduced to greater extent by addition of
inhibitors. Previously various inhibitors like that of chromates and nitrates were
suggested but they arent environment friendly and large quantities of additives are
required.

US Patent number 5,935,487 stated that addition of diethanolamide even in

quantities of 100-2000ppm will reduce the corrosion by 80-90%
