FADE IN
The WHIRRING of the engine is the only noise that is between ALA
and KARIM as they SIT silently beside each other in their seats.
No one is beside them in the three seat row. They SIT on either
side.
See the airport staff outside the plane with the orange guiders
for the plane to take off.
The plane takes off, seeing the size of the plane and the runway.
The pilot SPEAKS over the intercom once the seatbelt sign is
turned off.
PILOT
Attention passengers. This is your Pilot
speaking. We will be landing in Toronto,
Canada in approximately 12 hours and 10
minutes. Please relax and enjoy the flight.
Looking around, Ala sees Karim SHUFFLING around with his carry-on
trying to put it below the seat in front of him.
ALA
(leaning on the right armrest closer
to Karim)
Karim, why are they staring at us?
Karim
(arching his eyebrow)
You havent figured that out yet? Ala
(leaning in closer, lowering his
voice to a whisper)
They think were going to blow them up.
(he smirks)
Ala shakes his head and FALLS back into his seat and looks out
the small plane window.
The clouds and the sunrise light up the cabin a soft orange and
pink. Ala listens to the HUM of people talking around him.
A young boy about the age of five is playing eye spy with his
father and picking very obvious items.
The father is playing along with him pretending to not see what
he is hinting at.
BOY
(jumping in seat)
I spy with my little eye, something
that is white!
FATHER
I dont know, hmmm Maybe the carpet?
BOY
No daddy! Thats not right!
(shaking head aggressively)
Ala feels the coin ABEE gave him in his pant pocket and PULLS it
out.
The light from the window shines on the coin and causes a glare
that catches Karims attention.
There are many other children behind desks and a teacher at the
front of the class.
Young Ala looks up at young SOUZAN and smiles, watching his big
sister sing along with everyone else in the classroom.
FADE TO
The two kids have small twigs in the shapes of squares in the
grass.
SOUZAN
No Ala! You have to do it like this!
(grabs the coin from Alas hand)
See, the coin landed on the five.
You have to jump on every number but
NOT the five!
(starts jumping on one foot on
the numbers)
ALA
Let me try! Its my turn!
(pushes Souzan and throws the coin)
BACK TO AIRPLANE
Ala RUBS the coin between his fingers and smiles at it.
ALA
Im good.
KARIM
You okay?
(puts hand on Alas forearm)
ALA
Mhm. Yeah, yeah Im okay.
(moves arm away)
Just excited to finally see my sister.
Its been so long since she left. I
shouldve went with them.
He puts the coin back in his pocket and GRABS a magazine from the
seat back in front of him.
The SNAP of the magazine opening suggests that Ala doesnt want
to talk about it.
They SIT in awkward silence.
KARIM
Why didnt you go with them?
Ala SLAPS the magazine on his lap and SIGHS. He shifts in his
seat and takes a moment to answer.
Again, the quiet MURMUR of the other passengers fill the silence.
ALA
I had everything here.
(looking down at his lap)
Didnt see what was going on around me.
(looks up to Karim)
Didnt care to.
KARIM
Were you close with your father?
ALA
We used to be.
(runs hand through hair)
KARIM
What happened between you two?
Did you get to fix it before he
ALA
Died?
KARIM
Yeah uh, sorry.
ALA
Kind of
(sighs)
After my mother left we started to grow
apart. He tried to push religion on me
and he would wake me up every morning and
say Allahu Akbar son, Allahu Akbar. I
never understood why we had to care so
much about God and living the Muslim
life. My mother understood me better.
But watching him die was the hardest thing
I ever had to do.
KARIM
My parents died when I was about five.
I lived on the streets for a while.
It wasnt until I got captured that I
didnt have to fight for my food.
ALA
Really?
KARIM
Yeah. Learned a lot.
ALA
I bet.
KARIM
Yeah so whats your sister like?
ALA
I dont know anymore. Its been so
long all I can remember is her young.
KARIM
How old were you when they left?
ALA
About fifteen.
KARIM
Oh, yeah.
ALA
Mhm.
Karim opens his mouth to speak but the pilot comes on the
intercom.
PILOT
Attention passengers. We will be experiencing
slight turbulence. Please stay in your
seats with your seatbelts fastened. Thank you.
Eventually Ala falls asleep in his chair while Karim stays awake.
The little boy from before gets up from his chair and WALKS over
to Karim.
BOY
Hi! My name is MATT. Whats your name?
(hiding slightly behind the armrest
closest to the isle)
KARIM
My name is Karim. Nice to meet you. How
old are you Matt?
MATT
Five.
(shows five fingers)
KARIM
Five? Wow! Youre getting old! I
remember when I was your age
Karim and Matts voice fades slightly and we see Matts father
noticing that Matt is talking to Karim.
Other people start to notice the boy talking to Karim and glare
at the father.
FATHER
Matthew. Get over here please. NOW.
MATT
Bye, Mr. Karim.
FATHER
Matthew, you cannot talk to him.
Hes dangerous. You couldve been hurt.
MATT
Not by Mr. Karim daddy. Hes my
friend.
FATHER
Dont argue with me Matthew. Dont do
that again. Do you understand?
MATT
Sorry daddy.
The father continues to talk to his son but Karim can no longer
hear it.
Its Alas first view of Canada when he steps off the airplane
onto the outdoor ramp.
Ala looks around and feels the cold air of Toronto in the mid
afternoon in early October.
Ala and Karim glance at each other and smile while they walk down
the ramp.
Once they reach the bottom of the ramp they both stop to take
their carry-ons and look at the airport, then at each other and
continue walking, smiling the whole way.
People are BUMPING into them as they take a while to get into the
airport.
Their bags are torn open, the two of them are physically checked.
Ala sets off the alarm when he walks through the metal detector
and pulls out Abees coin from his pocket and apologises to
security.
ALA
Sorry. Just a coin.
SECURITY
Put it in the bin sir.
(steps very close)
Parents grab their children and pull them close when they walk
past Ala and Karim.
KARIM
Let them think what they want.
They dont know what weve been through
to get here.
Ala doesnt reply and jumps for his bag when the revolver sends
it through.
Both Karim and Alas bags are partially opened and their things
inside are unfolded and thrown back in differently than when they
first packed it.
ALA
Its like they dont want us here.
(laughing)
KARIM
Where are we really welcome?
(looking down)
Falling silent again, they both walk through large sliding doors
to arrivals.
Karim sees his wife and kids waiting for him with a large, home
made sign that reads WELCOME HOME DADDY and he stops in his
tracks.
ALA
Are you okay? Whats wrong?
Ala notices the sign and pulls Karim to the side and away from
the flow of people.
Karim straightens out his shirt and pants, not breaking his view
of his family.
Ala says nothing and lets him prepare for the reunion.
Ala and Karim step back into the flow of people when a boy yells
MATT
Look mommy! Its the terrorists that
daddy was talking about on the plane!
They tackle them to the ground and put pressure on their heads
and backs.
SECURITY GUARD
Stop resisting! Stop resisting!
Both Ala and Karim lay perfectly still on the ground staring at
each other in desperation. Karim yells for Ala.
KARIM
Ala! Ala help me!
The security guards assume hes yelling Allah Akbar and pull out
their gun.
ALA
No! Stop! Stop! Please dont!
BANG! The security guard shoots Karim in the back of the head.
All that is heard is a RINGING sound and the scene is silent but
movement continues.
Ala watches the blood flow from Karims head. Karims eyes
staring at Ala.
Ala struggles with the security guards as they pull him off the
ground.
Everyone around them is rushing away from the scene and grabbing
onto their children and family members.
The RINGING continues and nothing is heard but MURMURS and only
movement is occurring.
See the folder with Ala and Karims passports and documentation.
EXT. AIRPLANE DEPARTING
VOICE
The passengers for flight 4006,
Destination, Damascus, Syria should
now be on board. Thats flight 4006,
heading for Damascus, Syria, should
now be on board.
Ala watches the men bring the plane into its spot out his
window.
Ala sits in Abees house on the couch in the same spot that he
was at the beginning of the movie when he first saw Abee.
He looks around the room at all the knocked over picture frames
of him as a child with his sister, photographs of his mother and
father.
Ala takes the coin out of his pocket and fiddles with it in his
hands as he walks into the kitchen
-- Ala and Karim sitting by the fire laughing with each other on
their journey to the refugee camp.
-- Karim on the phone with his wife for the first time, smiling
and extremely happy.
ABEE
Allah Akbar. God is great.
Remember that son.
BACK TO BEDROOM
Ala sits up on his bed and allows tears to FLOW down his cheeks
onto his lap.
Ala STANDS up and LOOKS out the window to see the same group
members that took him and Karim.
Ala LOOKS at his sisters coin and FIDDLES with it with his
fingers.
The camera stays on the coin until the SLAM of the door is heard.
Ala LEAVES the room.
