A spherical balloon filled up with helium gas, density 0.7 kg/m3 is required to lift a water
container of 25 cm x 25 cm. x 25 cm size in mid air which is shown in Figure Q1c. The mass of
the container is 15 kg and only 80% of the container is filled with water. Determine the
minimum radius required for the balloon to lift up the container including the water. Assume the
rope weight is negligible.

Helium = 0.7 kg/m3

Air = 1.2 kg/m3

Water =1000 kg/m3

In an experiment, pressure gauge PA in Figure Q1a shows a reading of -17.2 kPa. The density of
oil and Liquid A are 700 kg/m3 and 1,600 kg/m3 respectively. Determine the height of liquid in
the piezometer hO, hW and hL. If the density of mercury is 13,600 kg/m3, find the head of
mercury, hM.
