Analysis of EOS 101: The Dynamic Earth

Professor: Dr. Emily Klein

Semester: Fall 2016

Coursework:
Lectures include powerpoints, animations, and pictures of content.
o Content studied:
Plate tectonics
Minerals
Earthquakes
Weathering
Climate science
Freshwater and ocean science
Volcanoes
Weekly homework consisted of 10-20 multiple choice questions that reflect what is
learned in lecture.
o 2 extra credit assignments provided in addition
Tests are multiple choice and consisted of 90 multiple choice questions

Benefits:
Provided me with a challenging first content class in which I had to push myself to study
and focus on the content while also student teaching.
o The tests could be difficult at times since they were all multiple choice but the
homework really helped me understand what was learned in lecture.
Gained knowledge on earth science concepts not previously studied in undergrad.
o This course allowed me to dive into the concepts taught in a basic earth and
environmental science course.
Enhanced my understanding of geologic processes and how parts of the
earth interact with one another.
o Prepared me for higher level geology courses in which I built upon what was
learned in this introductory class.
Ended up teaching some of this content in my earth science class spring semester.
o Taught students about layers of the atmosphere and ocean composition at Durham
School of the Arts during spring semester
o The content in the course directly applied to what is taught in an earth science
class and provided me with more confidence in teaching.
Dr. Emily Klein is the professor I am doing an independent study with this summer to
build upon my knowledge and develop lesson plans for my future earth science classes.
