Experiment 7: Measurement of Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid)

Objectives:
a) To determine concentration of Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) in the sample.
b) To determine the method for measurement of Vitamin C.
Materials:
0.020% DCPIP solution, 0.5% oxalic acid, standard ascorbic acid (0.5 mg/ml), mortar
and pestle, 50 ml burette.

Result:

Volume of DCPIP needed (ml)

Sample Average
1 2 3
Ascorbic acid standard 6.0 - - 6.000
Fruit (Lemon) 0.6 1.0 0.3 0.633
Vitamin C tablets 4.6 3.4 4.0 4.000

Calculation:
Measurement of Vitamin C in fruit and vegetable
Standard ascorbic acid = 0.5mg/ml
1 ml of DCPIP = 0.5 / 6
= 0.083 mg/ml
Average volume of DCPIP solution used in lemon (0.633 10 25)/ 15 g of lemon
10.55 ml/g
Average volume of Vitamin C content in 1 g lemon = 10.55 ml/g 0.083 mg/ml
= 0.876 mg/g
Measurement of Vitamin C in tablets
Average volume of DCPIP on vitamin C tablet (4.000 ml 100 10) / 1 tablet
4000 ml / 1 tablet
Amount of Vitamin C content in 1 tablet 4000 ml 0.083 mg/ml
332 mg
