Dear Ms. Gongora:

Cochlear implants are a modern technological device that assist people with hearing. I chose this
topic to grow in the knowledge of machine-assisted devices that help with sensory problems,
such as a cochlear implant. My godmothers five year old son, a child very close to me, has a
cochlear implant, so this played a role in my choosing of this specific device.

Cochlear implants are a beneficial alternative solution for adults and children who have auditory
impairments. There are problems with current hearing assistance devices that cochlear implants
do not have. Studies have shown that speech has both auditory and visual components, and the
effects of a cochlear implant help with the visual component. Cochlear implants can assist a
hearing impaired childs intellectual development, because the inability to hear at a young age
has a negative effect on their ability to learn and communicate. To research my topic of cochlear
implants, I plan to use various internet resources as my main sources for my research paper.

For the physical aspect of the project, I will learn words and phrases in American Sign Language
and teach them to my younger brother. I will also assist and observe my godmothers sons
speech and hearing therapy to further learn how cochlear implants affect young children who
have hearing problems.

My understanding of plagiarism and/or misrepresentation is to write down somebody elses

words and not give them credit. I understand that Sierra Vista High School holds a high standard
of academic honesty by which I will abide. I will submit my research paper to www.turnitin.com
to check for plagiarism. I also understand that if I were to copy or plagiarize my research paper, I
will not be given credit for the paper that may result possible failure of the first semester of
senior English in a disciplinary action.

Sincerely,

Ian Reyes
