ABSTRACT

THE PHYSICOMECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF NATURAL ORNAMENTAL

STONES AND THEIR USE IN THE ASSIGNMENT OF CE MARKING

Natural ornamental stones, i.e. marble, granite etc., have been widely used in the past and there is
currently a renewed interest in them by the construction sector. This sector utilizes 7/10 of the world
stone consumption, giving the natural ornamental stones a leading role among structural materials,
since they are more flexible from other substitute materials. The natural ornamental stone applica-
tions in todays buildings not only add to their aesthetic appearance but also fulfill the relevant eco-
nomic, technical and environmental demands at a very attractive quality to price ratio. Conse-
quently, it is required that the stone quality must be certified by determining its physicomechanical
properties, on which its endurance in environmental / climate impacts and mechanical stress de-
pend. The CE marking being assigned to final products certifies that the producer has taken into
account the relevant legislation framework and denotes the products conformity with European
Standards and / or Technical Approvals, so that it may legally be placed on the market.
