Discuss the roles of the Witches in Act 1

In the opening scene of William Shakespeares play Macbeth, the audience is

introduced to a supernatural environment on the blasted heath. Shakespeare
aims to situate the Elizabethan audience to feel fearful as withces in the
Elizabethan period were believed to be exceptionally evil. Furthermore, the
weqaather being thunder and lightning uplifts the feeling that the witches are in
fact sinister and have a pivotal role int eh play. Furthermore, they speak in
trochaic tetrameter and paradoxically in order to create an ambiguous mood
showing the fact that they create a manipulative yet sinister environment.
