The Journal of Indonesian Islam (ISSN 1978-6301) is a
refereed academic journal published biannually by the

Postgraduate Program (PPs) and the Institute for the Study
of Religion and Society (LSAS), the State Institute for
Islamic Studies (IAIN) Sunan Ampel Surabaya (SK Rektor
No: In.03.1/HK.00.5/SK/408/P/2006).
The journal puts emphasis on aspects related to Islamic
studies in an Indonesian context, with special reference to
culture, politics, society, economics, history, and
doctrines. It cordially invites contributions from scholars of
related disciplines.
The editors appreciate peer-reviewers' comments on the
earlier draft of articles published in this journal. They value
any help in increasing the quality of the journal in order to
fulfill the journal's objectives.

464 Advocating Gender Awareness amongst Indonesian Muslim

Abstract: It's difficult to speak of the characteristics of
Islamic thought in Indonesia during the early period the 9th
century until toward the end of the 16th century. The
unavailability of the resources on this issue and the attitude
of Indonesians in general that prefer spirituality rather than
thought and ideas serve as the main reason for this
difficulty. It is with this challenge in mind that is paper is
designed. It is aimed at historically describing the
development, characteristics and thrusts of Islamic thought
in Indonesia prior to the advent of the salafi current of
thought. It brings to light first, the irrevocable role of the
Arabs, the Persians, and the Indians in the dissemination of
Islam in the country. It argues that Islamic thought in
Indonesia is influenced to a large extent by the dynamics of
religious thought in these regions. Given its very nature,
Islamic thought in Indonesia was impregnated by the
dynamic tension between the Sunnites and the Shiites, the
Shafiites and the non-Shafiites, the Sunni Orthodox
Tasawuf and the Philosophical Heterodox Tasawuf as well
as between the Sunnites and the Batinites.

The following guidelines for prospective authors apply:
Each manuscript should begin with a 150-word abstract of its content.
Articles should be approximately 6000 words long; however, both shorter
and longer manuscripts will be considered.
Articles could be based on either conceptual or empirical research findings.
Manuscripts should be submitted for consideration by email attachment;
Microsoft Word is preferred.
Notes should be numbered in the form of footnote.
Unless otherwise indicated earlier, abbreviations should be avoided. Titles
of journals should be written out in full.
The reference follows this format: Author, Title (italic), Place, Publisher,
Date. E.g.: (1) Footnote: John R. Bowen, Muslims through Discourse:

All article manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by qualified academics in the
field; this is a process that may take weeks or months.
Manuscripts may be edited for style prior to publication.
Authors should be willing to respond to questions from readers of their
articles.
