Time: 50 minutes- possibly 2 days

Number of Students: 7-8

2. Materials Needed:

a. DOL

b. Whiteboard

c. Projector

d. Lined paper

e. Letter example

f. Construction paper

3. Goals/Rationale:

Goals: For students to understand how to properly address and write a


letter. Students will also learn social skills of helping others and kindness.

4. Objective:

After completing this lesson, students will know how to properly address

and write a letter.

5. Standards:

CCSS.ELA.Literacy.2.1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of

standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

CCSS.ELA.Literacy.2.1.B: Use commas in greetings and closings of letters.

6. Developmental Prerequisites:

a. Students will know how to write a simple sentence.

8. Presentation

a. DOL

i. Have students begin working on the DOL

ii. After students begin finishing or are becoming frustrated

complete DOL as class on board

b. Letter

i. Writing a birthday letter to Andrew Didyk who is from

Grand Rapids and will be turning 16 in March. He wants

birthday cards from anyone for his birthday.

ii. Discuss how to begin a letter, what to write in a birthday

card, and how to close a letter

iii. After completed on lined paper, have students transfer

their letter to construction paper and decorate

9. Differentiation:

a. Derrick, Bryce, Tucker, Elanzo, and Haydon write 2 sentences

b. Luis: Try to get 2 sentences but 1 is acceptable

c. Gavin: Write 1 sentence

d. Blake: Write Happy Birthday or similar

10. Assessment:

a. Informal assessment:

i. Observation throughout class

a. How do we begin a letter?

b. How do we end a letter?
