Amsterdam Declaration 2002

After reading the article, it came across my mind what the real meaning of humanism is. According

to what I have read, Humanism is a philosophical and ethical stance that emphasizes the value

and agency of human beings, individually and collectively, and generally prefers critical thinking and

evidence (rationalism, empiricism) over acceptance of dogma or superstition. Humanism is a non-

secular or religion life stance centered on human sciences. According to the declaration humanism

inspired well known creative and intelligent people be curious on science.

The declaration has different principles which are agreed upon different institution. I agree that

humanism is ethical as long as it does not violate the dignity and autonomy of each and every

individual. It is ethical as long as human rights are not violated. It is also important to note that

although science and technology is important we must still operate under the principle of human

values and morality. Also, humans have the autonomy, liberty and democracy we still have the

responsibility of maintaining respect for human life and dignity. I believe this declaration is made so

that we have a set of guiding principles to follow on humanity regardless of our race, sex or religion.

For me the message that is being conveyed by the declaration is RESPECT. We may have different

beliefs in terms of living our lives but I know that it is innate to mankind to respect and preserve

human life and dignity of all living individuals. Humanists have a duty of care to all humanity

including those of our future generations. In humanism, it is our basic responsibility to observe

morality and operate based on understanding and concern for others without actually waiting for

something in return.
