Thedesignoftheneedlevalvecanbeexactlysameasthatoftheglobevalveexceptforthe
disk.Inglobevalves,thediskislikeatruncatedpyramidwhereasintheneedlevalvesitwillbe
full.Thisfacilityensuresfinerflowcontrol.Thediskcouldalsobeintegralwiththestem,in
whichcasethebottompartofthestemwillbemachinedaccordingly.

Atotallydifferenttypeofconstructionisalsousedfortheneedlevalvesofsmallersizes.A
needlevalvehasarelativelysmallorificewithalong,taperedseat,andaneedleshaped
plunger,ontheendofascrew,whichexactlyfitsthisseat.Thebody/bonnetconnectionwillbe
screwedontypeinsteadofbolted.Inplaceofaflangedglandwithglandbolting,thepacking
willbepositionedwithascrewedunionglandnut.Thestemwillbeofinsidescrewarrangement.
Thismakesthevalvecompact.

Thebodyandbonnetcanbeofforgedconstructionorcanbefabricatedfrombarstock.These
valvesareusedonlyforlimitedapplications.Eventhoughthecodecoversthisdesign,these
aremostlymadeasperManufacturersstandard.

Thisvalveiswidelyusedforlineshutoff,instrumentationcontrol&forpressureregulating.

Unlikeaballvalve,orvalveswitharisingstem,itisnoteasytotellfromexaminingthehandle
positionwhetherthevalveisopenorclosed.
