Suggested problems: Design of suspended growth systems for

BOD removal

Problem one:

A conventional activated sludge plant is operated at solids retention time

value of 8 days. The reactor volume is 8000m3 and the MLSS
concentration is 3000 mg/L.

Determine:

a) The sludge production rate.

b) The sludge wasting flow rate.

Assume that the concentration of suspended solids in the recycle is equal

to 10,000 mg/L and the solids loss in the secondary clarifier effluent is
minor and can be neglected.

Problem Two:

Design a complete mix activated sludge process with recycle to treat

wastewater with the following characteristics:

Parameter Unit
Flow m3/d 4000
BOD mg/L 800
nbVSS mg/L 200
Temperatu C 20

b) The amount of waste solid produced per day (Kg/d)
c) The aeration tank volume
