Sample of Direct in-text quotes:

Fear and love are two contradictory terms that can produce very different outcomes. Fear for
many, is a trait that is more attainable than love. It is better to be feared than loved
(Machiavelli [1532] 2006, 54).
Sample of Paraphrasing:

Option 1:
According to Machiavelli ([1532] 2006), it is better to be feared than loved (8).
Option 2:
Fear can be very detrimental to society but in the same sense, at times, it can be better to be
feared than loved (Machiavelli [1532] 2006, 8).
Option 3:

If you have already used quotes and paraphrased authors in your previous paragraphs and
sentences, you have automatically already stated the year for the author. This means, that in your
sentence you have already done this at one point: According to Machiavelli, ([1532] 2006)

This means that if you are writing anything else and you use the name of the author you do not
have to put that information in again. It will be repetitive. Instead this is the template you would
follow for paraphrasing:
Fear and love are two contradictory terms that can produce very different outcomes. Fear for
many, is a trait that is more attainable than love. Machiavelli for instance argues that, it is better
to be feared than loved ([1532] 2006, 54).
***Notice here that even though you did not put the year of the author when you first mention in
in your paraphrase, you still put that information at the end in your citation. ***
