"Between stimulus and

response there is a space. In
that space lies our freedom
and power to choose our
response. In those choices lie
our growth and our
happiness."
-- Stephen Covey

Humans are driven by 5 psychological needs embedded in our genes:

BELONGING FREEDOM

POWER FUN

SURVIVAL

Principles of Choice Theory

The only person whose behavior we can control
is our own.
All we can give another person is information.
What happened in the past has everything to do
with what we are today, but we can only satisfy

our basic needs right now and plan to continue

satisfying them in the future.
All behavior is Total Behavior and is made up of
four components: acting, thinking, feeling and
physiology.
All Total Behavior is chosen, but we only have
direct control over the acting and thinking
components. We can only control our feeling and
physiology indirectly through how we choose to
act and think.

Choice Theory in the Classroom

As educators, we need to
teach our students:

We have a
choice in every
situation
We may not
always like the
choices available to
us
We have the
ability & the
responsibility to deal
with the choices in
our lives
We are happier & healthier when we understand the power
of choice lies within ourselves

Our goal as teachers: to be a part of our student's quality world,

(the core of their lives that includes the people, things & beliefs that
satisfy their basic needs).
We can accomplish this through "lead teaching" rather than "boss
teaching."
"Lead teaching" encourages students while using the 7 healthy
habits.
