Crackdown on Animal Abuse
What Weekly Reader magazine described as a typical, sunny day in Miami,
convicted drug dealer Allan Laboy was trying to rest when he kept arising to the
barks of a puppy outside his house. Filled with anger, he rushed outside where he
began smashing the puppys head against the concrete, all in front a little boy - the
owner. Because animal abuse is a felony crime in Florida, Laboy was sentenced to
10 years in jail for which upset his lawyer. The lawyer claimed the punishment
Laboy was given, did not fit the crime. Many protested against this statement and
against all the other animal abuse crimes committed that went unnoticed. The
biggest result from all protests, was that fifteen states imposed stronger penalties
on animal abusers.
Animals that are physically and brutally harmed, is sickening. But for a young child
to watch what is most likely their best friend get murdered is beyond belief
disgusting. No person, nor animal should have to go through something that tragic.
Many animals, like the small puppy, are helpless; to be killed for something they
have almost no control over, is not fair. From a personal standpoint, the lawyer
should not have argued with the sentencing. No animal, nor person deserves
something so brutal.
