Question:

Does the type of music affect the

number of heartbeats?

Hypothesis:
If different types of music (classical
and hip hop) are played to people
then, the classical music will make the
persons heartbeat go slow.
Independent
Variable:
Type of music

Dependent
Variable: Number of
heartbeats

Constants:
1.People listening
2.Volume of music
3.Where and how music is played

Materials:
1.Hip Hop music
2.3 different people
3.Classical music
4.Stereo
5.Room
6.Stethoscope

Procedure:
1.Take resting heartbeat for
(15 seconds) multiply 4 to get
beats per minute
2.Put classical music on for 5
minutes at volume 15
3.Take pulse again for (15
seconds) multiply by 4 to get
beats per minute
4.Subtract change (starting
from ending)
5.Record data (change in
heartbeat)
6.Repeat 6 times (with
classical music)
7.Do steps 1-6 with hip hop
music
Conclusion:
1) The purpose of my experiment was
to see if the type of music (hip hop
and classical) affected the number of
heartbeats.
2) My hypothesis was if different types
of music (hip hop and classical) are
played to people then, the classical
music will make the persons
heartbeat go slow.
3) My hypothesis was supported
because the hip hop music made the
three peoples heartbeat go faster
than the classical music.
4) The average of the hip hop music
for Steven was 11.0 heartbeats per.
Sec. The classical for Steven was 3.0
heartbeats per. Sec.
6) For Maliks hip hop average it was
5.0 heartbeats per. Sec. Maliks
classical average was -8 heartbeats
per. Sec.
7) Kennys hip hop average was 9.0
and his classical average was -4
heartbeats per. Sec.
8) I think that I got the results that did
because usually hip hop music wants
to make people dance and get in the
groove. So there heartbeats went
up.
9) Unlike the Hip hop music, the
classical music made you almost tired,
and sleepy so it actually put there
heartbeats lower than before.
10) The results of my experiment are
reliable because the following
variables were kept constant: people
listening, the volume of music, and
where/how the music was played.
11) My experimental data is accurate
and consistent because I measured
carefully using a stethoscope.
12) I completed 3 trials for each of the
different types of music, and I
calculated the averages correctly.
13) My experiment can be repeated
by another scientist.
