Everyoneatsomepointwishestheylivedinaperfectworld.Butwouldnt
everyonesdefinitionofaperfectworldbedifferent?Whatonemayconsider
perfectmaystillseembrokentoanother.TheWorldControllersinthenovelBrave
NewWorlddideverythingtheybelievedwouldhelpmaketheirenvironment
perfect,oratleastwhattheyperceivedasperfect.Someofthemethodstheyused
seemedasthoughtheyfailedinperfectingtheworld.
OnewaytheWorldControllersbelievedtheworldwouldbeperfectwasif
theyseparatedeverybodyintodifferentgroups:Alphas,Betas,Gammas,Deltas,
andEpsilons.Whendoingthis,theywouldgothroughtheBokanovskyProcess,
whichwastheirwayoffertilizinganddevelopingtheembryos.Oncethechildren
wouldgetoldertheydseparatethemintothefivedifferentgroupsandwoulddo
thingstoeachgroupthatwouldseparatethemfurther.Smallhandsreachedout
uncertainly,touched,grasped,unpetalingthetransfiguredroses,crumplingthe
illuminatedpagesofthebooks..Theheadnursepressedalever.Shrillerandever
shriller,asirenshrieked.Thechildrenstarted,screamed;theirfacesweredistorted
withterror.Theirlittlebodiestwitchedandstiffened.Theexplosionsceased,the
bellsstoppedringing,theshriekofthesirenturnedtosilence.Attheapproachof
therosesandbooks,theinfantsshrankinhorror,theirvolumesuddenly
increasing.(Huxley20-21)Thisexcerptexplainswhathappenedtooneofthe
groups;theDeltas.Theydidntwantthisspecificgrouptolike/becuriousabout
rosesandbooks.Soinordertoseparatethemfromthisspecificthing,theytorture
theinfantsandmakethemhorrifiedatseeingthesethingsagain.
Doingthistoseparatethegroupsiswhathurttheminthefirstplace.Given
thefactthateachgroupwastaughttodislikecertainthings,thiswouldcauseone
grouptoseemmoresuperiorthantheother.Thissuperiorityiswhatcausedsome
groupstonotliketheotherorcausedthemtoalllookdownononeanother,thus
failingthemfromtheperfectworld.
AnotherwaytheWorldControllerstriedcontrollingthemwasbygiving
everyonesomethingcalledSoma.Thiswassomethinggiventotheindividualsthat
wouldmakethemhappyandnotallowinganyonetofeelanytypeofpain.The
creatorsthoughttheperfectworldinvolvedconstanthappiness.Drawnbythe
fascinationofthehorrorofpainand,fromwithin,impelledbythathabitof
cooperation,thatdesireforunanimityandatonement,whichtheirconditioninghad
soineradicablyimplantedinthem,theybegantomimethefrenzyofhisgestures,
strikingatoneanotherastheSavagestruckathisownrebelliousflesh,oratthat
plumpincarnationofturpitudewrithingintheheatherathisfeet.Stupefiedby
soma,andexhaustedbyalong-drawnfrenzyofsensuality,theSavagelaysleeping
intheheather(Huxley258).Thisexcerptisexplainingwhathappenedwhenthe
somawouldrareoff.Theywerentusedtofeelingpain,sosomepeoplefoundit
fascinatingbuthorrible.Thisgoesagainstthewishesofhavingaperfectworld
becauseitgoestoshowthatnothinglastsforever,notevenhappiness.Thingsare
boundtohappenthatwillmakesomeoneunhappy.Insteadofhidingpainfrom
everyone,itwouldvebeenabetterworldiftheyknewhowtogetthroughthese
situations.
Inconclusion,IbelievetheWorldControllerstriedmakingitaperfectworld
bymakingtheBokanovskyProcess.Theymadeupallthesethingsthatendedup
hurtingthesocietymoreintheend.Therewaspeoplethinkingtheyweresuperior
toothers.Andtherewastoomuchhappiness.Somuchthatwhentheyfeltactual
paintheyfoundittobeunbearable.
