For my close friends and loving family.

Foreword

I have always enjoyed reading these types of genre of books. I dont know how or why

but it always interested me into reading more. Hoping to try reading more mystery and criminal

type stories which possibly could be intriguing to me. This story is not intended for everyone as

it may cause some people to cringe.

Prologue

A lonely girl searching for hope arises from the ground as her deepest darkest problems

are hidden behind her innocent face. This teenager, Brianna Mills, lives with her only sibling

which is a brother named Jeremy Mills. Later in her freshman year, she meets her two friends

that are both one of the populars of her school. With a big group known throughout the whole

school. However, they compress into just the three of us to create a small group. The both of
Mojica 2

them still have time to hang out with their other friends but somehow they always made time for

me. I was very grateful of that for sure.

Jeremy Mills (a twenty one year old) and Brianna Mills (a sixteen year old) lived together

on their own with no parents, no roommates, and no guardians Jeremy is legally responsible

for Brianna. As a source of income, they both own a restaurant and bakery named, The Corner

Mills, and it sits on a busy corner of their town. A huge influx of customers enter and exit on a

daily basis in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The menu has food and drinks that fit the

whole day.

Her favorite subject in the entire school-wide courses is Culinary. Her love and passion is

baking and cooking, hence why her company was aspiring and growing continuously. The power

of her talent can create a piece of goodness called food. Nothing can stop how she influences

other people, and coworkers, to feel the food that is made. Lets continue on with her life story in

her perspective and the view of others around her.

Chapter: The Corner Mills

(Briannas Point of View)

The bells chimed like the bells on Christmas day, but this time it was the sound signaling

a customer has walked through the doors. The quiet, empty room erupted of one voice saying,

Hello! Welcome to The Corner Mills. The restaurant and bakery was just starting to open up

on this early morning, right before the rush of people needing their bread and coffee. I took a

glance to my left, looking up at the hand clock. Counting the clock to figure out the time, it only

took me a while to see that it is only seven oclock. This is not early for most people, but for me

especially its very early.

Mojica 3

The new person in training, Adam, was guiding the elderly couple to a booth at the corner

of the room. The couple that walked in is so cute. I dream for that to happen to me in the

future with my husband, two kids, and dogs. Anywho, getting that my future goals that may

never happen out of my mind.

The morning was starting out to be a really good one. My brother, Jeremy Mills, actually

woke up this morning and is helping all the staff with the preparations before I can head out to

school. School is important to me and his help with this can get me to get ready early and look

better than I have been lately.

In our family owned company building, it is a structure placed on the corner of a

somewhat busy intersection in this town. Plenty of vehicle and foot traffic passing by, which

means we can earn some decent profit. The smell of our delectables can be smelt outside. It

always interested people to take a moment and purchase a pastry or sit down to order.

The interior has a warm and comforting feeling that would have you enjoying the

environment. Newly renovated floors, tables, and technology. Freshly mopped floors that has

light shining from the reflection of the ceiling lights, some attached to ceiling fans. With the

upbeat staff, I can not, not love this place. Arent my sentences the best? Not, not.

Off to the distance I hear, Brianna! Bri!

It was my brother calling me from the kitchen. What seems to be the problem this time?

In a sarcastic tone, I said, Yes, loving brother of mine?

Ha ha, youre really funny, he said, I just need your help taking these things to the

front.
Mojica 4

Staring at all the newly baked cookies, cupcakes, brownies, cheesecakes, hot cross bun,

pies, and many other yummy foods. I nodded my head in agreement, starting to carry all the

trays. I placed them on the counter, beside the display shelf that is straight from the main

entrance. One by one precisely putting each one next to each other in organized rows and

columns.

Can you hurry it up? You have school to get to.

Yeah, yeah, I know, rolling my eyes in the process.

We finally completed our task at hand as I rush to get myself ready to school. Just taking

off my apron to hang it on the proper place. Putting on some mid-priced perfume to cover the

smell of pastries and breakfast meals. Hmm, satisfied as I looked at myself in the mirror. Just a

white plain t-shirt with light washed jeans and white converse shoes. Hair straightened at the

sides of my head. Light makeup on my face just for self satisfaction. Not the best I could do, but

itll work for today.

Grabbing my black Jansport backpack and rushing out the door, I shout a quick, Bye

bye! Quickly spreading the double doors open, not waiting nor hearing a response back.

I enter the outside world of the hustling and bustling town. The busy street hearing

honking and yelling of road rage drivers. If only they left their house earlier, they wouldnt be in

such a hurry. The intoxicating smog from all the vehicles can be smelt on the side. I casually

walk on the sidewalk heading towards the school as the smell starts to clear up from my nostrils.

From side to side, I see groups of friends together. I dont really have any friends, in

general. Well a big group of friends I have two, Abigail and Bryan.

Chapter: New Guy

(Briannas Point of View)

Bbbbrrriiiiaaaannnaaaa!

I hear someone shouting my name from not so far away. Like they were just standing

next to me. Looking to my right, I see bryan (one of the friends I told you I had) walking towards

me from a short distance. He tripped and almost fell making me chuckle and laugh to myself.

Gaining stares from other students not minding their own business. But thats how high

school is, full of nosy people looking for new gossip. Oh, and judgemental people.

I dont look that bad today, I dont think. I actually tried to look good today. Especially

since it was a Monday, the first day of the school week. High five to me! Imagining myself

giving a high five to myself. What a weird thought, to be honest.

Acting like Im not fully there, Bryan said, Earth to Bri! Are you there?

Another roll eye moment, I stare at him straight in the eyes, Yes I am.

Giving him a light smack to the back of the head.

Ouch! Gosh Bri I just wanted to be a nice person and say hi.

Well, hello.

Ha ha, Miss Sassy this morning.

Walking together side by side like the rows of lockers right next to us. Looking up

towards each lockers, finding the correct locker number. I entered my combination attached to

the contraption, opening the metal box and grabbing the needed notebooks to take my organized

notes in. I love my notes, its so in format and color coordinated. Unless, my pen runs out or I

lose it. HIGHLIGHTS, and not the makeup.

Theres a new kid who got here today.

Mojica 6

Oh really. Good to know?

Yeah, I heard hes going to be in your math and culinary class.

A he, I hear? How nice, a new douche to add to your popular crew.

Wow full of attitude.

The loud, obnoxious bell suddenly rings straight into my ear, interrupting our

conversation slash tiny gossip and causing a minor headache. Luckily, I was saved by the bell

ha jokes!

Bye bye Bryan. Behave yourself now.

No promises little Brianna.

As I attempted to walk away and get to my first period class in time. I dont want to be

late like I was last Friday. My teacher looked like he wanted to beat me that day.

Umph

I ran into a brick wall. Well, it felt like I ran into a wall. It was just this strong, white, tall,

lean dreamy anyways. Basically, I ran into another student that looks like he was in the same

grade as I was, but I didnt know who he was actually. Dropping my binder onto the floor, thank

goodness not all of my papers fell out. That wouldve been a disaster. Kneeling down to pick it

up, I see the male walk away.

Did he not feel me bump into him or something? He did look like he had a lot on his

mind. Ill let it pass this time because I was having a good day so far. Not letting the peasants,

they call my peers, let me down. Not today, not today!

The fudging bell rang. Running to my first period trying to not look as exhausted as I

was.
Mojica 7

Where have you been Miss MIlls?

Running to your class. I drop

Enough with your excuses Brianna. Take a seat at your desk.

I huffed to myself quietly. Carefully walking to my seat trying not to trip and make a fool

of myself. These rows of desks and backpacks sprawled onto the floor can be quite tricky.

I sat, kind of slouching at my desk to get myself comfortable for the long period of just

sitting. I looked at the empty desk to my right, figuring it was not empty for even a bit. It was the

same guy who I ran into in the hall I assume. What a coincidence?

I think I was staring too long because all I heard from his lips was a clearing of a throat

and him saying, Hello. ?

Oh, sorry! ...Hi, I abruptly said to the unknown man, I w...as just surprised that

someone is sitting at that desk.

No trouble at all.

I cant believe I stuttered that much. As I worried for a brief moment, he just

nonchalantly stared forward at the teacher. He pays attention to class? Pfft, I bet thats just a first

day thing.

I doodled on my notebook. My separate notebook for doodling and sketching, I cant

mess up my beautiful notes I tell ya. Drawing a cupcake on the lined piece of paper. Mmm,

master piece! Call me Picasso.

Brianna. Can you answer my question?

What even? He knows I didnt pay attention. Why would I know the answer?

Uh um
Mojica 8

The answer is 2x cubed, 9x squared, plus 18, the guy to my right answered proudly.

Thank you Xander, but I wasnt talking to you now was I?

First, I finally know his name is Xander. Nice name, good job to his parents. Second,

what is up with everyones attitude this morning? I just want a good day, is that too much to ask?

First period Math finally ended and I could not be any happier than right now. Thank

you, thank you. My prayers have been answered. Exiting the room, going to my next class and

the class after that, and the class after that one.

It was the middle of the day. Which makes it the best part of the whole entire school day

because its lunch Some of you thought I was going to leave school, ha. This was a break from

a majority of the teachers and peers. Some still lingering in the distance.

Oh. My. God.

Yeap, I know who just said that.

Brianna Mills.

My best friend, Abigail Abbey for short.

I said, Hey girl!

Hey hey hey! Were sitting outside today.

Fine with me. Nice weather outside.

We both rushed to the lunch lines, before the line got any longer, to grab our green

salads not sure if it was fresh but it was edible. Yes, I know. Typical white girls. We just felt

like a salad today, dont judge. Maybe tomorrow well get a cheeseburger or pizza. Mmm, love

me some meat sometimes.

Mojica 9

Exiting the cafeteria, into the warm breeze. Loving this California weather. We sat down

where Bryan was sitting. Reserving the spots for us and shooing away his group of friends, all

guys. They annoy me sometimes thats why they dont sit with us. That one day we let them, I

regretted that decision.

We chatted and ate, just enjoying each others company. That was until a topic that Ive

been trying to avoid was brought up.

Yes! That new guy, hes so hot, said Abbey.

Of course she would say something like that.

Hush hush, people will hear us dummy, I said.

These two dont know how to quiet down at times. Well end up getting in trouble one

day.

Whatever. They can listen to our conversation, Bryan said. Im snatched.

Agreeing with Bryan, Abbey continues to say, Its their fault for listening. Isnt he in

your first period Bri?

Yes, he is. But why are we even talking about him?

Hes hot duh, arent you somewhat interested in him? You two would look cute

together.

Thanks, but no thanks. I need to focus on my education, get this SAT dealt with, and

college and the restaurant.

Yesss, the restaurant. Your dirty little secret.

I cant believe these two. I wonder why theyre my friends, but theyre my only friends.

Ill deal with them for now. Im kidding, Im kidding. I love them to bits.
Mojica 10

As if on queue, Mr. Xander passes by us. Smelling a whiff of his cologne.

Unintentionally he was passing by.

Mhm, I see you staring.

Abbey stop it! We were just talking about him thats why Im staring.

Hmm sure save your excuses.

I exaggerated my sigh. Earning stares from neighboring tables. Mores stares, thats all my

peers are good at. Watching and listening thinking it was good gossip. Too bad, guys and gals.

Bryan and Abbey need to take a chill pill and relax. Its just lunch time and theyre

getting all riled up over nothing. These two will be the death of me one day.

Chapter: Culinary

(Briannas Point of View)

Its the last period which makes it a plus. But the one thing that makes it a bonus is that

its my favorite class out of all my classes. Baking is a winning game as the winning game is

baking. Im mostly, always early to this class because my previous period was nearby. Just a

couple other students in their seats unpacking their stuff, just like me.

But little did I know this one guy Ive been seeing the whole day steps into the room. Mr.

Xander himself, forgetting that he was going to be in this class. Striding to the front of the room

with his ego and confidence. His looks could kill someone.

I can hear all the way from my seat, Hello, you must be the new addition to my class.

With his deep voice he said, Yes, that should be me.

Ill seat you next to my best student and the only seat available, Brianna Mills.

She said, Brianna raise your hand for me.

Mojica 11

I reluctantly raised my hand as Xander went towards my direction. Help me last this

period. He put his stuff on top of the table, relaxing into his seat. Second period with this guy,

and were always sitting next to each other. The real question is, why is the seat next to me

available in both classes he shows up in? The world may never know. But others will say,

Faith! Faith Ill tell ya. Those people just need to calm down.

Ring ring goes the bell. Like my bell impression? Everyone was seated and was ready for

the assignment on task.

Hello students! Today will be a laid back day.

The classroom roared with cheers!

Meaning youll make your own meal that you choose without guidance! It must be a

baked pastry.

Some people sighed, but others was still excited, including myself.

Get to it gentlemen and ladies! The receipe book is on my desk if you need it.

Everyone hustled to their mini kitchens as did I. I saw in the corner of my eye, Xander

walking slowly behind me to our station.

Wh...at did you want to bake?

My voice was getting quieter as I tried to finish the sentence.

I dont really care.

Sigh, this is going to be harder than I thought. From all the possibilities we can choose.

How about hot cross buns? Cupcakes, brownies, apple pie

Apple pie.
Mojica 12

He even interrupts too. I quickly but steadily wrote the recipe down on a sheet of

notebook paper. This will taste amazing, Im glad he chose the food Ive been craving just this

morning.

Um. How do you know all this?

Commenting on the list of ingredients and measurements we need. I was frozen in shock

at first. I didnt want him knowing I work at a restaurant and bakery.

My brother always asked me to bake him it. He loves apple pie.

He responded with a grunt and head nod. How lovely indeed. Together, we slowly

worked as a team to complete this assignment. Every single time I try to impress my culinary

teacher, Mrs. Andrews.

Not paying attention to what Xander was doing. I shouldve thought that through because

when I turned to take a glance at what he was doing it was normal. Just for safety measures I

tasted the mixture he was told to do by me earlier. The taste and texture seemed alright to me

for now.

We completed the pie in just the right amount of time. Cutting a slice out and creating a

great presentation with cream and powder on the plate. Yum, looks good already. Xander had a

smirk showing a sign of accomplishment. Must have boosted his ego higher than it already was.

Time is up! Wait patiently for me to check each one of your teams master piece.

Watching Mrs. Andrews circling the room stopping by each kitchen station. From her

facial expressions, you can see her giving a disgusted face, a frown, and a smile. I was anxious to

see her reaction to my I mean Xander and Is pie.

Mojica 13

Looking up after a relaxing mini break, the teacher was standing at the edge of our station

with a smile drawn on her face.

Brianna, cant wait to taste what youve made.

She glanced at the item on the table. Looking hungry as ever.

Oh, an apple pie I see!

She took the fork on the side of the plate and stabbed it. Gliding the fork off the plate,

you can see the gooey substance in the apple pie slide off deliciously. The crust was crumbling

with delight. A masterpiece this was. Good job me!

She took a bite off the fork. Creating an eminent moan of enjoyment. The whole class

started to look where the odd sound was coming from. It was from the teacher. The class started

to get louder with laughter, including Xander. I blushed deep red as they all stared in our

direction. Poor Mrs. Andrews.

O.M.G. is that really really good?

Of course, Xander made it

Xander, can I try some?

No let me first!

The whole class started to say. Rolling my eyes in my head, Im the one who made this

the most. I should get credit too you know. I could see Xander smirking once again. Not at the

food, not at the class, but at me. Wow, thanks again. Here comes the blush getting redder if that

was even possible. Red as a tomato.

Mojica 14

Half of the class surrounded this mini kitchen. Everyone with forks out trying to get

pieces of the pie. The whole class erupted with moans. Um, this is really awkward and

uncomfortable. I didnt know the food was this good, let alone GREAT.

The bell rang for the last time today. I rushed out of the classroom leaving the pie and

ander to themselves. I needed to get to the restaurant as fast as I can so I can make it to my shift.

Dont want the other staff to think Im not trying and slacking off. Thats the worst judgement to

get from people.

--

I, Xander, said to myself, So is this pie as good as all the other people are making it?

Taking a bite from the delicious delectable in front of me. It brung back memories of

winter, of the holidays, and Christmas.

But it also reminded me of this little girl I knew when I was young. When I was in

elementary school walking on the streets being the little lost self. The pastry that tasted like

heaven, thats what this reminded me.

Chapter: Restaurant Xander Encounter

(Briannas Point of View)

Waking up alone on my cold bed in my isolated room at the back of the house. A

peaceful place to be considering all the busy work and school environment. Just somewhere to

relax and relieve all the stress that is bombarding me from society.

My train of thought was interrupted when my brother continuously knocks on the door.

Wakie wakie eggs and bakey!

I lightly growled and gave a sigh, Im up, Im up, dont get your panties in a twist.
Mojica 15

After a full minute, he stops knocking on the door which gives me a feeling of relief.

Rolling around on my bed trying to get myself up but I cant. Its like the bed is sucking me in

and the cold is keeping my huddled in the warm, soft comforter blanket. And of course

something has to happen when I start hearing the sound of my doorknob jiggling and twisting

around. The door opens all the way as my brother sprays me with water from a water gun. Out of

all people, he would find a way to unlock my door and bardge in to just wake me up.

Yes now youre awake, he obnoxiously said, Get ready, its a long day today.

Groaning in distaste of his commands telling me what to do. Just to please him, I sat up

on the edge of my bed staring directly in his eyes.

You can leave now, I said.

He snickered while walking away, probably enjoying the torture he is giving me. Rushing

to get ready, I showered for at least ten minutes, getting the clothes I had the good ones of

course, and the occasional light make up. Looking in the mirror, I looked spot on. Props to my

hard work early in the morning.

Exiting my room, I quickly walked to the entrance of the restaurant. Hoping not many

people are waiting for me to assist them with setting up. As I scouted the room, everyone was

working hard by setting up the table, cooking pastries, heating ovens, prepping food, and

cleaning the counters.

Pitching in as a team, we all worked to get the restaurant opened in time. Flipping the

sign to the side where it says, OPEN, and unlocking the doors for the customers to flow inside.

Heading towards the direction of the kitchens, I planned to aid the people at the back with

anything they needed to reduce the stress on them.

Mojica 16

A couple minutes later, the bell on the door jingled. It wasnt the first time, but for some

reason it made me look up. The sight of Xander entering the double doors of the restaurant made

me fall onto the ground. I was basically crouched below the surface of the kitchen counter to not

be viewed through the open concept kitchen to the front counter. That was a close one, dont

want him to know Im working here. Hell find out more about my life than most people.

Especially finding the truth about why I know recipes and why I smelt like pastries all the time.

Hello! Welcome to The Corner Mills, the new trainee saying the script on point, Are

you ordering here or to-go?

Im just gonna get some hot cross buns, Xander replied casually, I need to place an

order too on a cake.

I can see him peeping at the name tag of the newest addition to the Mills team.

Thank you Adam.

My pleasure, sir. Just wait on moment.

No, no, no. I know hes going to get me to help him because Xander chose to place an

order. Where is my brother when I needed him? Sigh, pray for me everyone. Adam takes his

time to walk towards the window where you can talk to the people at the back of the kitchen.

Brianna! I need your help at the front!

One... moment, I responded back with a slight hesitation.

He looked back at Xander, The manager will help be here shortly.

Xander just gave a slight smile back giving an indication of, okay. I start moving

towards the doors to exit the kitchen, letting momentum take its course. I exited the back area,
Mojica 17

looking at a wide eyed Xander staring at my direction. God, please let him not tell anyone my

secret.

I stared down at my shoes, arriving at the counter in a timely manner.

Grabbing a binder full of options, I continue staring at the words and pictures printed on

the paper, What would you like to order?

I wanted to pick a cake, somethin a girl would like. Maybe... with strawberries on it?

A cake for a girl? Who would he buy it for? His girlfriend? Maybe his sister, yeah or

mom.

A strawberry shortcake sounds like a good choice.

Yeah, yeah. That is one tasty cake, he wondered for a bit, Could you add a name on it

too?

Yes, what name?

Courtney.

Courtney? Okay, I questioned while thinking if Courtney even went to our school.

Him telling me the date he would like to pick it up, I placed his order in our roster and

computerized system. With a short, goodbye and bye, he left the restaurant making the bells

jingle once again. Exhaling, releasing a breath that I didnt know I was holding. Looking at

Adam, I can see him snickering to himself while he watched the whole situation. Damn, he

knows whats happening.

I quickly left the room, blushing bright red, returning to the kitchen to continue on the

stock checks. What an eventful ten minutes to be honest. Highlight of my day for sure.
Mojica 18

Chapter: The Order

(Briannas Point of View)

I was supervising the afternoon today so I took a longer slumber. Possibly for a restless

night of watching Netflix and reading books last night. Shouldve not done that and saved it for

the next day. Whenever I wake up near the middle of the day, I feel as if I wasted half a day.

Ill get over it eventually. Right now Im just here at the front counter, making sure my

staff is doing okay. I trust them so its not that bad. Some of them are even older than me,

chuckling to myself.

Hello, Im here for a pick up, Xander said.

Looking over to the cash register, I see my helping him out. He sees me staring so he

smirks at me. Im so shook, I didnt mean for him to see.

Xander said, Maybe take a picture?

This shocked me a ton. I became frantic in my head, but remained composed outside. I

can feel my head pulsing from my conscious screaming at me! This is so nerve racking.

Uh-Uh! I didnt mean to, I said, quickly looking away.

I heard a snicker and a chuckle, assuming that was Xander standing over there. Sigh, I

didnt know it would feel this stressful. Its like trying to finish a book, or even taking a final.

Im really triggered.

Here you go, sir! The cashier, Roberto, on duty piped up.

Nice timing! Saving my life there buddy.

Thank you, Xander inspected the box, But you forgot to write the name.

Im so sorry about that! Let me fix it for you, Roberto said and grabbed the receipt to

figure out the name.

Mojica 19

I guess now it was Xanders turn to stare. I gave him the side eye, giving a questioning

facial expression.

Yes? I said, questioning his actions.

Nothing. Just copying what you did to me. Enjoying the sight while I do it, he

responded in a cocky way.

I blushed a deep red on my cheeks. Darn you Xander.

Youre all set, Roberto said, coming back to the hunky hunk.

Thanks..., Xander stared at his name tag,...Roberto.

My pleasure! He said in excitement.

When Xander turned around and went half way towards the exit doors. My inner

thoughts came out, maybe my desperate needs. No, I dont have the baby fever.

Have fun with Courtney, I said, with attitude and sass intended.

Excuse me? Xander faced my direction.

Oh, nothing! You know, your little toy youre trying to please.

This cake, he pointed at the box, ...And this person named Courtney, is my little sister

not little toy.

I gasped, shocked that it was his sister. I knew it was not a girl! Well I kind of did and

announced it to the world that it was his little toy. Oops!?!

My bad, I turned around blushing to myself.

In that moment, I was relieved to hear the bells on the door jingle. That meant he left the

building on his way to his sister, Courtney.

Mojica 20

I hear another set of chuckling! Im just a laughing stock. I go look at the general

direction of the laughter and its Roberto.

I know Roberto, I get it, I said.

He just smiled, knowingly that I knew it was the most embarrassing moment that he has

seen of me.

Chapter: Football

(Briannas Point of View)

Youre going to the football game.

We were seated at our usual table during lunch, when Im trying to eat the food I packed

for myself. Abbey has been persuading and tempting me to go to the football game tonight. Her

words and constant nagging has been making me sway towards going. She even used Xander as

a way to make me go to the game (how triggering) because when he transferred to this school he

quickly got accepted into the football team.

Bryan even ended up pitching into her persuasion, Yeah, go with us Bri. Itll be fun!

Fine guys, Ill go, rolling my eyes at the two delinquents.

The whole school day passed by quickly because its already the end of the period. Bell ringing

and everything, students flooded the hallways making it all cramped. Meeting the two people I

call my friends at my locker. Unpacking and packing the things I dont need and need for the rest

of the day.

Football game huh? Dont forget, Im picking you up at 6pm.

Woo, fun fun. How can I evvverrr forget, I sarcastically questioned back at her.

Its going to be fun, trust me. See ya later.

Mojica 21

All of them walked away heading towards their cars to leave me behind and head home.

Well, Ill see them later today anyways. I put my backpack back on and headed to the outside

world. Leaving this jail behind, even though Ill be back for the game.

Out of my luck, it starts raining. Good thing Im wearing my camo green jacket. Here

comes Xander walking towards his group of friends near the end of the outside hallway where

theres an overhead to cover the rain dropping onto people.

Once I was done checking my phone, it was the same time Xander was ready to leave

too what a coincidence. We started walking in the same direction. Is faith trying to tell me

something or can I just walk home in the rain? I open my umbrella walking straight to the

direction of my warm, heated home.

But what the heck, Xander was not even wearing a hood over his head or even holding an

umbrella. Hes going to get sick! Out of instinct of caring for people, I walk up next to him and

hold an umbrella over him and I.

I said, You seemed like you needed to be covered if-if only you want of course?

Oh, uh thanks. I really needed that, he said smiling to me.

A full on smile! Geepers! I started to act very concerned,Why arent you covering your

head? You might get sick!

Okay mom, I just forgot to dress for a rainy day, his words caused me to blush.

I frantically said, I didnt mean to say it like that! I was just worried is all.

He laughed to himself of the way I act. Darn me and my personality.

He said, Are you going to the game?

Mojica 22

Most likely I am, my friends are forcing me, I said, with a small smile attached to the

end of the sentence.

Its going to be fun. My team and I are going to beat them. Gonna be a blast.

I could tell. Everyone is hyped up for it.

Of course, were the winning team at the end of the night. I hope I see you there?

Fine, fine. Ill goooo. Ill try so you can see me?

He chuckled, Hopefully it doesnt rain.

Same. Same.

We walked in silence together until he had to split roads to go to the other direction. I

guess he lived on that side of town instead of this way.

Bye Xander, see you tonight, I said with a wave.

He said, a short statement with a hint of slight enthusiasm to it, Bye.

I actually had another full on conversation with the boy outside of school. One step ahead

of what I actually thought I would be with him. What am I even saying? Its just one

conversation that shouldnt be worried about. Silly me.

The sky seemed to clear up. Both my two friends cheered in excitement and high fived

each other. Having smiles on their faces being proud that they finally made me agree to their

plan. Yay me, I sarcastically said to myself.

My friends and I were sitting in the student section together, mixed with most of our

peers surrounding us. The atmosphere was so upbeat with cheering and laughing and

conversations and overall positive vibes. The occasional people doing waves and body surfing.

Of course, the administrators got mad about the body surfing, haha.
Mojica 23

Sometimes when we did chants, I just awkwardly stood on the bleachers like a rose in a

field of dandelions on a warm, windy day. I somewhat new the words but Im not much of a loud

person so I just clapped, maybe a little shout.

Lets go Panthers! Lets go! Woooo!

Were gonna rock our team to victory!

The game was over. WE WON! WOO! GO SCHOOL! Haha, that was a funny shout

school. Ha! That was veryyy funny. My two friends and I stayed a little after, sitting in the

bleachers. Of course we were taking pictures to remember this amazing day. Especially Mr.

Xander running across the field in his Football outfit.

Later on in our photoshoot, I see Xander peeping his head out from the entrance to the

bleachers.

He starts shouting and said, Brianna! Need a ride home?!?!

Uh, I mumbled to myself.

YES SHE DOES, Abbey said really loudly in my ear.

I was so confused, Abbey was having a wide smile, glad that she said that.

Oh my gosh Abbey look what youve done, she just continued smiling. Today was full

of yeses for her.

I quickly side stepped and jumped over the bleachers to head down the endless rows.

Gosh, we were so high up in the stands. I could just see smiling staring at me in awe. Wow,

thanks buddy.

I reached the bottom completely exhausted and out of breath.

I guess someone needs a lift, he said, grabbing me and pull me over his shoulder.
Mojica 24

Xander! I said in an obnoxious tone.

He just laughed to himself. Carrying me all the way to his car. Thank god it wasnt

raining or I wouldve been wet by now. Opening the door two his car, he just sets me in the

passenger seat and buckles the seatbelt for me. I feel like a princess right now, Im aweing. He

runs to the driver side door and quickly enters to start the engine.

He drives in the direction of my house as I give him directions to input it on his phone.

The sound of the GPS fills the car instead of silence. We start short conversations about how our

day was, what we did on the weekend, what we will do when we get home, and so many other

stuff. Mostly those conservation starters.

We finally reached my house.

I had a nice time at the football game, you actually got our school to win, I said.

Dont be too surprised now, you knew I had it in me, he said.

Yeah, yeah of course.

Good night Bri.

Night Xan.

Thats when we just stared for a little bit. But after a few seconds I got back to reality and

opened the door and rushed out heading to my front door. The front porch light is open just for

me, because if it was off I wouldnt be really be able to see where the key slot is. As I open the

door, I hear the car start to speed off. At least I knew he was waiting until I got inside my

house especially if I got myself locked out. That wouldve been so embarrassing.

Chapter: Home Away From Home

(Briannas Point of View)

Mojica 25

Panting, sweating the sweat off my forehead as I walked, jogged, than sprinted home. I

was scared of many things that came out of the night. The walk from the schools football game

frightened me from the possums crawling around, the occasional dark alleys, and random people

walking the streets.

Slamming the door of my comforting and safe home. Breathing in the intoxicating scent

of dinner. Sniffing more to find out what was prepared, it was was Chicken Alfredo Pasta and

garlic bread. Imaging the savory taste in my tongue made my mouth water from excitement. I

mustve been hungry, I shouldve eaten at the game.

Im home brother!

Come in the dining room, I cooked.

Strolling across the living room, I entered the dining room. An open concept house was

the best because you could see all over your house. From the living room, to the dining room,

and even the kitchen. It was a nice space and a nice house to live in because of the area. The

restaurant of ours had us with a decent amount of money but a ton of stress. I love it when we

have moments like this, eating dinner together.

The small chandelier above the dining table lightened up the room. The food was clearly

just cooked as you can see the light beaming at the food showing the smoke rising from the pots

and plates. Table mats, plates, and utensils were waiting for me to use them and satisfy my

hunger.

Jeremy was seated already seated as if he was waiting for me to come home. He was just

on his phone, perhaps strolling through his Instagram feed. I pulled out the chair across from
Mojica 26

him, creating a squeaky sound when you drag the chair across a wood floor. The floor was even

cleaned too! He mustve done this before I got home. Good job for him.

My brother and I glanced at each other, smiling because we know what we want to do

right now. We grabbed our plates and started to gather the food onto our plates. Some white

people food of course, we got a bowl of green salad, Chicken Alfredo, and garlic bread. Diving

into the food, but we forgot to check how hot the food was when we stuffed it into our mouths.

Spitting out the food onto our plates as our tongue started to burn and have that sensation.

Having a family moment we chuckled to ourselves. Sighing from relief, I really really

missed these moments because we rarely get to have them. A stress free time, a time full of

memories. Checking the temperature of the pasta with our hands hovering over them. Carefully

stabbing it with our forks, double checking if it was hot my the touch of the lips to the food. Safe

to say, we shoved it in our mouths and chewed on it like no tomorrow. The food was really good,

I know he took his time to get this perfected.

Around ten minutes later, we were stuffed. Like on the brim of having our stomachs

explode onto the table. We were all smiles of how satisfied we were.

Wait, hold up. I almost forgot dessert.

He walked slowly to the kitchen because of how full he was. I had a light chuckle from

how he walked but I could relate to be honest. When he came back, I see him carrying a plate

with a cover on top to hide the contents inside. Seeing a smirk forming on his face, I was excited

to what he was going to reveal. Opening the cover slowly, I gasped. It was my favorite dessert in

the world. Strawberry Angel Cake with a side of strawberry ice cream. As he placed the plate on

the table, I went in on cutting a piece for myself and scoping a cup of ice cream on the side. The
Mojica 27

room filled with my moans of delight when I continued to eat the most beautiful creation on

Earth.

My brother was giving me weird looks and stares. He already knows I love it, why is he

giving me that attitude? Ha, ha, whatever big bro, you made this happen.

Okay, okay. Ill be getting ready to sleep, said my Jeremy.

Ill finish this up and clean up the mess.

Good night, sleep tight.

Glad he was being extraordinarily nice tonight, I shouted, You too!

A phone rang from across the table, ding! I mustve left it here earlier. Approaching the

phone as it was still lit up. I stared down on it, releasing it was a text from Xander. How did he

even get my number?

Ty for coming, the text message said.

Knowing he meant the game, I responded back, Np. Supporting the school was fun.

You did great too, finishing off the game with a touchdown beating. Bye, bye rivals.

Ye, gotta do what I got to do to beat those, he finished off the text with tons of

profanities.

Ttyl, Im about to sleep.

Good night.

Recalling earlier tonight, everything has been eventful.

Chapter: Nightmare

(Briannas Point of View)

I shouted across the whole house, Mommy! Daddy!

Mojica 28

I repeated what I said, but no response was given. It was late at night and I heard some

type of commotion downstairs. Somehow Im back at my old house when we had a big house

some people even say its a mansion but I disagree. The other houses in the neighborhood that

was doubled this size. Of course, this rich neighborhood was a gated community with security

and everything.

Clanging of a variety of metal sounds and strange shouting of a group of men erupted

from the kitchen. Now I was very confused, more than I was when I got up. Still half asleep, I

carefully walked down the stairs. Almost falling at the last step, I somehow steadily balanced my

body to be perpendicular with the tiled flooring.

I hear fast footsteps rushing to the back of the house, hearing the grunts and shouts of,

Lets get a move on! We have to leave NOW! The heavy steps that sounded of big, buff men

faded away in the distance. Entering the kitchen was a major shock to my whole body. I couldnt

move, I couldnt look away. I just stared straight at the floor, where two bodies of middle aged

people were.

I screamed so loud, I was too scared of what was happening. I couldnt handle this right

now, I wasnt prepared. I hear someone rushing down the staircase coming quick to the

kitchen for sure my brother because that is the only other person at the house currently.

My brothers eyes bulged out basically trying to escape his face. Mouth gaping open like

someone just killed his parents. Oh wait, the people on the floor ARE my parents. My mommy

and daddy, I cannot believe this. Who would do something like this?!?

All I hear now is the sound of my brother panicking over the phone and police sirens

coming closer.
Mojica 29

The world felt like it was tumbling down. Boulders, trees, skyscrapers falling down on

top of me. My chest feeling like an accordion being squeezed, releasing all the air inside of them.

Thats how I feel deep inside.

From all the running, shouting, chattering, my brother approached me. Hugging the life

out of as I sob into his chest. Wetting his whole shirt, sniffling in the process.

Six months later, after the incident with no answered questions. The home phone rang, it

was the local police department. They called to say that they have bad news to tell us, so only my

brother went because he didnt want me to be affected.

The police have closed the case, they couldnt find any evidence to support a case.

My brother sat with me on the side, spilling the information he got from going to the

police station.

Thats when I opened my eyes and awoken from my slumber.

Chapter: Eye Connection

(Xanders Point of View)

Another day, another drug deal that needs to be taken place. My gang is losing profit in

our sales because of the other gang in town. Its not their territory and its pissing off all my

brothers.

Finding myself in my own apartment, I guess my roommate already left to go to that

confrontation with the gang. The apartment smells of dirty laundry and spoiled food filled my

nostrils as I FELT it go in I gagged a little. Setting a reminder in my head to get this place

cleaned up because it is an utter mess. Clothes spilled across the couch. Takeout food containers
Mojica 30

and left overs sprang across the floors, tables and counters. Small cracks on the walls telling a

different story of what happened in here with the previous owners.

Grey smoke can be found circulating the air in the living room, leaving remnants of what

occurred in this very room. The bitter scent of alcohol which the scent can be found outside this

building. The beer bottles littered across the floorboards, furniture, and our potted plants we

added those plants for the apartment to look a little alive and decorated? Just go with it. From

outside, you can hear the sound of our neighborhood partying it up at this time of the night.

Preparing for this successful night with my dark black clothes black jeans, black shirt,

black baseball cap I got freshly out of the shower, ready to step out of my house and get ready

for the night. Woo! Let me get pumped up because Im dead inside when am I not to be

honest.

I got in my matte black vehicle yes, that is black too, if you got the message, I like

blackgetting ready for the night that is just beginning.

I approach the only door lit from a single light above it. It was a door that was innocent as

it held everything dark and illegal inside. Nice door, I picked it myself.

Knocking on the door, a person jokes with me inside asking who I was. Obviously there

is a camera above that can see me. Thats why I put it there so its more convenient a safer for

us. I stick up a middle finger at it, making sure the person looking at it gets the message.

The door opens and I rush inside the room to see who is messing with me at this time.

Hey boss, Mason, my man, said.

With some attitude evident, I said, Yeah, yeah... What up Mason?

Mojica 31

Nothing boss, just getting ready for our whole team to go to this big deal that may go

wrong, I said.

As I see everyone heading to the garage with the vans and trucks, they must be almost

done prepping for what is ahead of us. Guns can be heard reloading and being reloaded. Thats

what I love to here.

I walk inside the garage seeing all our members here.

Guys attention, I said.

Everyone stared in my direction as they should be. Im the big guy here, if you havent

realized already.

Tonight I want it to be successful, perfect, and smooth. This is the time we have to get it

right. Be prepared to shoot when its time. Lets hope we dont but we have to act like they do.

Grunts, nods, and uproar can be heard. The agreements and cheers fill the small space.

Lets do what we have to do men. This will lead to a good pay tonight, with some good

sleep knowing we did it.

The men dispersed and hustled to leave the facility. Inhaling the exhaust of the vehicles

that were rushing out of here. Coughing in the process. I shouldve left the room. Silly me.

I arrive on location, parking my car beside the curb. Ill be the one handing off the drugs.

Stepping outside the car into the night life. Drunk people roam the streets, tumbling over

themselves, making me chuckle. Ahh, clumsy people. Walking straight into a dark alley, two

men were awaiting me with a briefcase. Thats my money! Carrying the duffel bag with me, I

have the stash of what theyre looking for. The necessity to their lives.
Mojica 32

Before I can approach them within arm distance I see something shining that they

begin to take out. As they raise their guns out to point at the direction that I am at, my men shot

both of them. Straight in the head, thats why we train.

Their guns go off too, but hopefully it only pointed down. I didnt feel any pressure or

pain anywhere on my body, thats good.

Acting all high and mighty of myself, I walk back in the direction I came. But when I

turn around, theres something very different. Very distinct to the human eye that frightens my

sight. It was the eyes of someone who lies deep in my heart. The one Ive gotten attached to

through a month or two. I knew I messed up right here, right now.

Chapter: Spilling the Tea

(Xanders Point of View)

Calling my partner in crime, the person I rely on. This has to be done today, right now.

Holding it in is so painful, living like this is so difficult. Its better now than it randomly coming

out from my mouth, or even worse from another person maybe her friends.

Chilling on my bed, attempting to calm down my nerves because I feel it in me, its not

going to turn out the way I want it to be. It has to be done. The doorbell rings, my eyes

immediately bulge out of my head.

I have to confess something with you. I know youre not going to handle it good, so I

think you should sit down. I said. Not knowing might cause her to feel guilty, guilt might lead

to betrayl, betrayl might cause pain, and pain has no end.

Im dreading this moment a ton. The weight on my chest is so heavy, its live a TV

hanging off a building. A person being scared of heights and being heavy, dang that is stressful.
Mojica 33

Im in a gang. You did see that happen last night, I said, hesitating a bit.

Her eyes widened immediately, jaws dropping. That is the sight I do not want to see. She

starts shaking, eyes wondering. Im done, I know its over.

Uh, uh. I need to go. I dont think this can continue, she said frantically.

The words I hate to hear. I cannot let this happen, but nothing can let me go and chase

after her. She needs her time, her moment.

Chapter: Heartbroken

(Briannas Point of View)

I cannot believe he said that. I was hoping of good news, but this my head is hurting

from all this information.

My hatred towards him was like a skyscraper slowly burning down by a fire created by a

gas explosion on a sunny day during a heat wave. While he is trying to fix this situation by using

one small fire truck trying to stabilize the blaze with one hose. Basically, I dont have my hopes

up.

I rushed to go home, anything in my way I pushed, I shoved, I moved away from me so I

can just reach my one destination I want to be at, my bed.

Chapter: Afraid of the Dark

(Xanders Point of View)

A night walk, just what I needed to TRY to clear my mind. Hence the word try, because

Brianna wont get out of my head. Im still shook over this whole situation. I didnt choose this.

I continued on walking down the street, inhaling the air filled with gas fumes but the flow of the
Mojica 34

cool breeze was quite relaxing. Not many cars were. The thing, more of a person, stopped

what I was thinking and focused on this person.

Those blonde wavy hair that always catches my attention. Her bright blue eyes shining in

the night. The colors of her outfit bringing out her inner personality. It was her I saw... my

Brianna. This is the moment Ive been waiting for. For her to be alone and I can finally talk to

her, one on one. No interruptions and just us us. Wish me luck.

I gently but urgently grabbed her biceps, pulling her into a dark alley. She let out a loud,

deafening scream like she was going to be raped.

With the amount of screaming, I tried to stop her so she wouldnt gather more attention,

Brianna! Its me! Its me Xander. Calm down.

She screamed frantically, Dont kill me! Dont kill me! Pleaseeeeee.

That made me so scared, I dont want her to look at me like a killer. Im a human being

that didnt choose this lifestyle, I was forced into it by my family.

Im not going to kill you! Just stop it. Stop shaking, I said.

Dont kill me!!! Ahhhh, she fidgeted around trying to get away from my grasp.

I looked into her eyes, Relax! Relax! Just calm down!

Life is just a game and this game has rules to follow. But, some people dont follow

those rules and start attacking me. This makes me want to defend myself even if it goes out of

those rules, I tried to explain to her with full passion. She needs to understand what Im trying

to get at.

She stared at me. Nothing else, she just looked into my eyes. It was kind of scaring me

even more than when she was calling me a murderer. The banters, the crying, the screaming, the
Mojica 35

thrashing, were too much to handle for me at this second. If only she loved me the way I love her

as the way she loves me will be the way I love her.

To think she cared for what I had to say,

To think she was frightened of my actions,

To think life has a happy ending to my story,

To think that here a man had no hope.

I was a man alone in the world, trying to gain back the light of my world. Without this

bright light, my world is dark. Emptiness fills inside me, my inside fills with emptiness. Poof.

Chapter: The Light That Shines

(Briannas Point of View)

Do you ever realize that the people around us doesnt care about our existence, our

existence doesnt matter to others?

Ive been mopping alone in my room. Struggling to even get up. Im so down, I felt so

attached. I feel betrayed.

Chapter: The Applicant

(Briannas Point of View)

Finishing up the stocking needed for the next day, I was waiting for the new applicant

that was supposed to be arriving this afternoon. My brother told me that he was a teenager that

goes to a school across the town from mine. I didnt know we needed more people employed
Mojica 36

here, but with the increasing amount of customers, it is surely needed. I heard footsteps heading

my direction, while I was at the back still signing off the clipboard.

One of the employees, named Meghan, peeking her head into the back area asked, Do

you think the guy will be good?

Hopefully! Or else it would be a waste of time, I said in a joking manner.

The occasional ringing of the bell when a person enters happens often. The teenager that I

was thinking was the person applying approached Meghan.

Hi! Im here for an interview, said the man. He was an eye catcher.

Sure! Ill get the manager right out for you, she said.

Quick footsteps vibrated the floor, feeling that Meghan was anticipating this moment.

She told me the man was here, so I quickly cleaned up the area so I can talk with this guy.

Stepping out of the back, going towards the man. I said, Hello! Im Brianna, one of the

managers here. Please have a seat.

Hello to you too. Im Cameron, he said. He stared at me, looking me up and down.

As I saw his application on the table, I briefly skimmed through it.

Your application looks great. Im just going to ask you a few questions.

Great!

Why do you want to work here?

Everytime I come here, I feel like this is home. Plus, the food is amazing. This is a great

first time job that can help me in the future. Just starting out. And also the people who work

here are lovely.

Mojica 37

He gave me a smirk with those side glimpse. Is he flirting with me during this interview?

I just blushed at that comment, Im not sure why.

Good, good. What do you expect to be doing?

Im applying for the front crew position. I expect to be helping customers with food

options, serving, dealing with cash, cleaning. Hopefully working with you, he said, smiling

towards the end of his last sentence.

Wow, okay I can deal with this. His flattery feels welcoming. Its like Ive known him

before. I continue on with the interview, knowing his short but flirty remarks back with each

response he gives.

I said, That concludes our interview. You have been accepted to work with us! Youll be

a great addition to our team.

Great! Thank you, thank you. I really need this job.

No problem, come tomorrow, which is Sunday, and well give you your orientation and

training. Goodbye!

Okay! Thats fine, see you tomorrow, he said as he exits the building.

Exhaling a breath that apparently I was holding in. But before I can stand up, Meghan

starts rushing in.

Omg omg omg, he was so hot right? He was totally flirting with you girl.

I chuckled and said, ... Okay I can agree.

She squealed going back to her work station as she saw that customers were streaming in

and waiting in line at the register. Lets see how tomorrow turns out.
Mojica 38

Chapter: Newbie Job Training

(Briannas Point of View)

Good morning! Rise and shine, its time to train the new boy. Regardless how it is, lets

hope he has the common sense to finish the tasks he needs.

Already setting up the newbies station in the morning. Ive got all this set up for him

ready for him to tackle all the scenarios that he might have to face.

Im already waiting in the dining area. Not too long, I heard the doors open and seeing

him appear in front of me.

Hello! Nice to see you here earlier than expected, I said.

He responded with, Its better than being late.

Great! We can get started earlier then.

He nodded, I directed him to the direction that he will be taught. I teached him the basic

ropes. How to use the register. Counting the money. What to do when theres a robber. How to

bag the food. Reloading the stacks of cups, lids, straws. I continued to get him to learn all the

things I needed him to have the knowledge of. This is a day where I can have him do whatever.

But not that I didnt expect it, he obviously flirted and I was totally flattered with that.

At the end of the day for him, which was technically still the afternoon. He didnt do bad

at all. He was a great listener and quick at his feet. I liked him Im talking about his skills! Not

about himself. This is a working environment people!

You actually did good. Im impressed, I said.

Mhm, I thought you would! I tried my hardest, he said.

Mojica 39

I could tell. He was already tired and exhausted from what tasks I had him to do. Full of

responsibility of course. A job comes with that. The stress and the hassle of going quick and

constantly moving. Its for sure tiring.

Chapter: The Storm Before The Date

(Briannas Point of View)

Bright and early this weekend. A feeling of warmth and cold mix together as I lay on my

bed with blankets wrapped around me in a comfortable position. I checked my phone to see if I

got any messages or notifications from anyone but I dont know much people so who knows.

Somehow, I have one text message. Its from Xander! He was texting me how we should meet

up for lunch because he has to tell me something important. Ugh, I cant wait!

From the nightmare I had, it would be a relaxing lunch date with Mr. Xander himself. I

wonder where hes taking me. This place must have good food because Im quite hungry if I do

say so myself.

Good morning Brianna! Youll be supervising the morning shift, said my brother.

I said, Fine, Ill do it but you have to fill in after the morning because I have plans this

afternoon.

A date with Xander? Have fun, I need to run errands. Bye!

Okay, bye big bro.

I quickly got read for the day, but of course Im going to change my clothes later today.

Getting prepared for just the morning, I rush towards the restaurant and bakery with my feet. I

cant drive yet and I dont have a bike well I do but like its in the back with a flat tire and

everything.
Mojica 40

Entering the building, I hear a welcoming Hello! As I search for the person who said it,

it was the new guy. Aw, hes already getting with the flow on how to always welcome the

customer.

I said, Hi, Cameron. Hows your morning?

Its been good so far. Great flow of customers today, he said.

I nod in acknowledgment as I head to the back and enter an office to access the computer.

Checking inventory and delivery, I hear a manly voice I surely recall from before and of

course its Xander.

Oh, I havent seen you here before, I heard Xander say.

Yeah, Im new. Did you want to order something? Cameron said.

Ill get two hot cross buns with a coffee.

Sure! One moment.

I hear rushing in the back of the cashier station, most likely Cameron trying to figure

stuff out. I exit the office to head over to station.

Did you need help Cameron? I said.

Oh yes, I need your help. Im not sure how to prepare this.

Here, Ill show you.

I was preparing the hot cross to show Cameron as an example. He was standing fairly

close, but I didnt mind at all. Well, until I heard a scary growl.

Youre too close Cameron, Xander said.

I looked at Cameron and his eyes looked like it would shoot out of his eyes. I scooted

slowly away from me, creating a gap between us. We all know hes scared now, more than me
Mojica 41

even. Continuing my demonstration to teach him how to do hot cross buns, I can still tell he was

nervous.

I left Cameron alone to finish his duties as I head to the kitchen to clean up the materials.

I hear

grunting and a loud whisper of Xander telling Cameron to not touch me and to keep a distance.

Chapter: Xander Gang

(Xanders Point of View)

Walking alone, going down a dark alley in the worst neighborhood in town. The only

light shining in the narrow street, aims towards this one door. The door into the darkest secret of

this area. I approached the door.

Thump, thump. I bang my fists against the door to alert the people inside to get me inside.

A speaker on the side of the door starts talking, Who? I dont have an idea why they are asking

when theres a camera right there we can see. Theyre just messing with me.

Xander now open up, I said with a straight face.

Chill bro, just messing with you a bit, the person on the other side responded.

The door started to making a buzzing sound so I abruptly twist the doorknob and push the

door roughly. I heard a grunt and a body fall on the floor.

The person lying on the floor said, WTF man!

Next time if you open the door for someone, dont walk in front of that door, I said.

He was one of my best mates on the block, his name is Mason. Might not be the sharpest

fellow, but hes loyal.

Welcome back, long time no see, he said.

Mojica 42

I said, I was just here the other day

He chuckled, thinking I didnt get the joke but I just wanted to give him attitude for

already messing up my entrance. Shots can be heard from afar. I guess were practicing our

shooting skills tonight some people needed, of course not me.

I head upstairs into a room designated for a shooting range. A makeshift area but itll do

justice for our purpose. We need to train, were not going to die from other people and gangs.

We need to thrive through this together as a family, as one unit. Defend our territory. Need to

enhance my great skills in shooting. More practice wont hurt.

As I took a break and laid down on the couch in our little rest area. One of our older

gang members was just chilling there, resting himself. Beer in one hand and an empty hand on

the other waving around. Hes telling the people in the room a story about his adventure.

Somehow he ended up talking about stabbing a person but the twist is that butterflies came out

of the persons stomach. I dont know if he was just drunk or was telling the truth. But freaking

butterflies came out of a mans stomach that he stabbed. Unbelievable.

Interrupting my focus in this weird story conversation. I feel my phone vibrating. Must a

text notification from someone. I look at my phone thinking its someone unimportant that I can

look at later. BUT, it was actually Brianna. Hmm, what a nice surprise.

I opened the message and shes telling me that we need to talk. That is not an issue at

all. Not nervous. Not scared. OKAY, maybe I am.

Day One Writing

(Not the main book)

The bell rang echoing around the whole restaurant. It was not that loud because we were

just one hour in opening this early morning. The sun has just rose a couple hours ago and were

already serving breakfast for the early comers. Not much is going on, all the staffers and myself

are still getting the restaurant adjusted for the later hours. The sound of the bell rang again.

Where did the hostess go? Ugh, whatever. Let me just go and get this customer dealt with.

Hello! Welcome to The Corner Mills, I said energetically with the most positive attitude I

could give. I just need a table for one today, replied the elderly lady in front of me. I directed

the woman to her table and the waiter arrived, ready to serve her. I love my staff, theyre just like

my family. Even though this restaurant was created by my father, they dont really manage this
Mojica 44

workplace. School, work, sleep, finances, eating, cooking, homework, projects, essays, and

socializing but I dont even have that much friends. My friends are my co-workers, theyre all

I have and its the best I could get so far. I dont really get along with the people at school

because I dont really match my peers. With the work situation Im currently in, I dont really

have time. Ive designated higher positions for some of my workers, but I worry everyday for

that small restaurant in this town. That is the only way my family, myself, and my mothers

medication can get paid for. Im struggling so hard to get profit out of this town, I just need to

help my family even though my family doesnt need me. They dont really care for me, help

me, and cheer me on. Its just me and this restaurant fighting through life, I guess. For some

reason I hear the voice of the manager I just promoted shout to me, Hey Keegan!! I trudged

along to the sound of the voice which lead me towards the kitchen. What did you need Hanna

and tone it down youre so loud, I questioned from her abrupt and loud yelling in this quiet

restaurant. This cash register is not working. These two gentleman need to hurry to class. I

looked to my right and see these teenagers being occupied on their phones. I dont think theyd

mind just a couple minutes, I chuckle, Let me just reboot it and see what happens. I powered

the computerized register off and wait a couple minutes to restart. Sigh, this might take a while.

One of the teens went up to me, Um, excuse me. Can we pay now? Class is about to start?

Sure, youre lucky the register just started up. Hanna ringed them up and gave them their

baked goods and rushed out the door. Mmm, the aroma of the baked goods and breakfast meals

starting to get stronger and stronger which causes me to be in delight. This job is my home,

and I care for it a lot. This is my get away from everything. Buzz buzz goes the vibration of my

iPhone 6s. Who is texting me right now?!? I looked down at my phone and it was just a reminder
Mojica 45

that I had school. Damn it, I thought it was actually someone. Whatever, need to rush to school

now, I dont know why those two teens were rushing so early. Plenty of time for them to get to

class but thats none of my business. Hanna Ill be going now, need to get my studies on, I

notified her just in case she doesnt see me walk out. She replies with her sarcastic but friendly

remark, Your outfit got me shook! Learn lots and be safe! Gosh, Hanna always brightens up

my day. With my adidas pants, stussy hoodie, and a matching adidas shoes to go along with the

whole flow which were gifted to me by one of my co-workers during my recent birthday. A

chilly but satisfying weather this morning getting me all happy for just school? That doesnt

sound like it. Its a Monday and I should be stressed out and worried by now but I guess

someone woke up on the right side of the bed.

Chapter One

(Not the main book)

I blinked for a quick moment in time. The room filled my eyes. The room felt warm and

cozy, just like a welcoming home. It was my familys diner prepping for the long day ahead. A

small, but adorable little place on the corner of a busy neighborhood street which I was basically

managing.

Basically my own company but it was founded by my father, Tristan Mills, to help raise

his family with the right amount of money. However, he slowly walked away from the company

after my mothers major illness. He started to separate from the family which consisted of my

mother Anna Bose, my brother Jeremy Mills, and lastly myself. Anyways, my mother is

suffering through an illness that messes up her mind and cannot think correctly. She has two

personalities, one that has the motherly touch to it and the other one that scares me so much. I
Mojica 46

always hope for the first personality because the second one is a lot to handle with the stress I

already have.

The bell ringing from the double door entrance awakes me from my daydream. Heyyyyy

Keegan, a voice exaggeratedly shouts which echoes through the walls into all the rooms. As I

am exiting the kitchen, walking towards the owner of that sound. Oh, hi Hanna, I respond with

my inside voice that she surely did not use. The manager, Hanna, walks inside the break room

clocking in for the day. The scanning noise registers through my ears as she scans her work ID.

Washing her hands, she prepares to start with the baked goods. A whole display was empty and

needed to fill quick if were going to sale delicious goodies for the first couple customers.

All the other staffers thats scheduled to work today have already walked in already

setting up for the rush of people wanting breakfast. Mmm, I can smell the aroma of baked

cookies, cupcakes, honey buns, hot cross buns, cheese danish, croissants, with breakfast burritos,

ham and cheese sandwich, variety of crepes, hash browns, pancakes, and french toast. Everyone

continues to cook and prep tables before we open the restaurant and be bombarded with

customers.

This time I hear an alarm ringing. What is this annoying alarm? Oh wait, its my phone

ringing telling me to go to school. Ugh, its that time of the week Monday. Right on time,

my older brother Jacob walks into the room. Jacob, its your turn to supervise the restaurant, I

have to go to school now. He replies with a positive, but somewhat sarcastic remark, Fine by

me, you have a good day at school now. Learn lots.

Thats my queue to leave everyone alone. Grabbing my plain, black Jansport backpack

that my brother gave me for my birthday over the summer, followed by running out the double
Mojica 47

doors with my arms stretched out. Not forgetting to turn the sign notifying everyone were open

to serve. The bustling neighborhood with car engines roaring through the streets. The occasional

honking from the drivers trying to get to their destination on time.

Occasionally looking around my environment seeing other students walking to school

with their group of friends. If only I knew how it feels like to be surrounded with a big group of

people. I dont have that many friends well just one.

Chapter Two

(Not the main book)

The obnoxious school bell rung signaling the next class. The narrow hallway with

students crowding the area. Filling the hallway, having barely any space to get anywhere. From

little shoulder and elbow bumps, it gets kind of awkward. People chatting can be heard as you

continue through the corridor. Shouting can be heard from different sections, sometimes even

classrooms. Almost slipped on a tiny puddle of water needing to be cleaned off the floor. That

shouldve been gone before the passing bell rung. I strolled to my next period hoping no one

would come up at me. After a couple minutes walking across campus, I finally reach my

destination. Almost tripping on the way to my seat, I spread out some of my materials on the

table. Ring ring goes the bell again. Time to begin my favorite period, Culinary!

Hello class! We have a new student joining us today, announced Mrs. Andrews. All the

qq2 male species in the class began to make whistling sounds and sexual remarks as she was

talking. To be honest, it was quite uncomfortable for me. Please welcome Abigail Johnson! She

is from California and a Junior.

Mojica 48

Abigail just stood still. Just smiling with delight staring around the room, taking

everything in. Hey everyone! The school experience has been great so far, she energetically

said. Gosh, that calming voice gets me everytime. Wait, why did I just think that?

You can go sit next to Keegan, the teacher faced me, Keegan raise your hand.

Abbey I mean Abigail started to walk in my direction. Of course faith had to put us

together and have her sit next to me. The only open seat in the class because my partner dropped

out of this class for not knowing anything and messing up several times.

Somehow I ended up dropping my pen, ugh clumsy me. Reaching for the object on the

floor, she beat me to it. Our hands brushed sending shocks through me. What is happening?

Heres your pen. I drop mine all the time, she lightly jokes, trying to make a

conversation.

Awkwardly staring at her, I grabbed it. Ha ha, thanks, I nervously chuckled a

response.

Breaking me from my trance, a loud voice goes through the whole classroom. Okay

students! We will be baking today, how exciting!! You can make whatever you desire, but it has

to be edible and creative. Everyone just stared at the teacher all hushed. Some students smiling

because we can bake delicious goodies this afternoon. You will be graded for your baking

skills, of course. Make sure you do it correctly, but also have a good time with this experience.

You may begin.

Everyone in class separated in their designated spots. Room fills with chatter and

discussion of the students deciding what to bake or cook. Ugh, what should we cook? Or should

we bake? A pie sounds so good right now. No clue.

Mojica 49

A girl voice interrupts my train of thought, Sooooo what are we doing? She eyes the

mini kitchen station wondering where everything and what was what.

Do you like hot cross buns? I asked, but she just nodded her head no.

I gave another option that I was really liking right now, How about an apple pie? Im

sort of craving it. She gasps with delight I hope, Yes! I love apple pie mmm.

Grabbing a sheet of paper, I scribble on the paper the ingredients, measurements, and

temperature for all the things needed to make this assignment perfect. With the fast writing to get

this food ready, I looked slightly to my right looking at a girl with wide eyes.

Oh my, whats this? Are these the ingredients? How do you even know them? The

quick questions being thrown at me with such shock. I responded with a straight answer, but not

fully correct. My older brother loves apple pie and I bake him this pie on special occasions or

when he asks me. That makes sense. The things you know about this, I bet it would taste

amazing! Her positivity directed towards me. The happiness in her eyes feel like shes covering

something, but I just brush it off thinking its nothing to worry about.

The preparation didnt take long. Five minutes everyone! Presentation should be spot

on, and of course the food. The teacher interrupts me with an announcement and a light

chuckle. As I was saying, the amount of time heating, baking, and preparing wasnt that time

consuming. The process was fun, the aroma of the different foods intoxicated the whole room.

Mmm, the smell.

Now were just adding some icing on top of the apple pie to give more of a taste. I rarely

see people do this but it gives more of a flavor. In addition, its a great design to display for the

finishing product.
Mojica 50

Now it was time for the grading! The culinary teacher circled the room, stopping by each

station to look at the presentation and flavor of the finishing product. Some smiles of pleasure

from some students, but others a frown telling them it was tasteful or edible.

The clipboard tapped the counter, making my senses come back to full. Now to my

favorite student. What do you have for me today Mr. Mills? She eyes the pleasant object right

in front of her. A smile forming at her lips giving a sign of excitement.

Uh, we decided to make an apple pie. I had responded to her question. Thinking that

was the answer she was looking for. She grabbed the fork and stabbed it like a starving person.

Culinary Day 2 | Dialogue

(Not the main book)

Another school day, another culinary class. This time were making any type of meal that

includes noodles! I was so excited, Ive been craving pasta. Mmm, pasta.

The teacher said, Class, go to your stations and prepare your area and set your

ingredients. Write down the recipe, grab the ingredients, and get your pots and pans.

She taught a brief lesson on safety and how to cook the noodles evenly. Some people

were confused, others were understanding, but for sure I was well knowledged about these types

of information. Continuing on to her lesson was just a review for me.

Okay! Thats all you need to know, you have enough time to complete this assignment.

If you have any questions, come up and ask me. Ill be at my desk.

Yes! I can satisfy my craving now. Before I can start dreaming about the types of foods

that has noodles in it, Abigal started to talk.

So what did you have in mind for us today? She asked.

Mojica 51

Uh Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo? Been craving it since yesterday. I said.

Yum! I love that! Great idea buddy.

A couple minutes passing by, you can hear the rustling metal sound of pans from students

as the time starts to lessen. Rushing to finish, Abigail and I moved around the mini kitchen like

zoo animals. I dont even know if were going to finish. From all the time it took for cooking

this, the smell of something burning erupted.

I alarmingly said, Is that from our food??

I hope not! She said, Check before its too late!

We all both went to the stove to check, but the food was all good. Nothing was burnt, it

almost looked like perfection. What was that burning smell?

Fire, fire! Mrs. Andrews said, Turn off that stove now!

Everyone looked at where the small fire was starting on the stove. You could see the

teacher grabbing a fire extinguisher under her desk and running to the two students, looking

worried and scared. Mrs. Andrews running across the class was the fastest I saw her move from

one point to another. It was like a cheetah going at its prey.

All clear! The fire is out. She revealingly said, Class, continue on until the last five

minutes of class. You will need to clean up at that time.

The sound of the teachers phone was loud enough for the whole class to hear. That

sound was to tell us that we should start preparing our meal on the plate and clean up our station.

Of course, I was preparing the meal to look the best it could actually look while Abbey Yes I

admit it, Im saying the nickname in my head. Its shorter, and flows right out of my mouth.

Anyways, she was cleaning all the pots, pans, utensils, and other materials we used.

Hallway Incident & Lunch | Dialogue

(Not the main book)

That is the end of our lecture and for notes. The bell is about to ring, pack your stuff,

said my Math teacher.

Time for lunch, my favorite time of the day. Piling all my papers and pens together,

stuffing them in my backpack quickly. The bell rang declaring lunch time. The students in my

class rushed to lunch like a stampede of horses.

Umph, I said once I walked outside the classroom.

Followed by a sound of metal, and the feeling of metal against my body. I was rammed

against a locker. Ouch, that hurt and will leave a bruise tomorrow.

Watch where youre going kid, said a guy who looks like a 12th grader, also the one

who assaulted me a couple seconds ago.

Ugh, why is everyone just running into us, said one of the girls with him questioning

my own actions, rolling her eyes in the process.

The group of seniors walked away nonchalantly heading towards the cafeteria which was

in the middle of the school campus. A voice piped up in the process of trying to stand back up.

Looks like you need help, said Abigail, Need a hand?

She chuckled finding this situation hilarious, obviously.

No, I just like sitting on the floor, I said trying be sarcastic as possible.

Wooww, a little sassy right now are we?

Mojica 53

She gives me her hand, assisting with me off the floor. Wiping myself off with all the

dust and debris from the floor flying off. The dirt going back to the floor where it belonged

also that guy who pushed me. But we cant choose.

Somehow, Abigail and myself are walking together to the cafeteria. I didnt notice us

walking side by side. I just daydream a lot, losing my train of thought all the time throughout the

day.

Hows your day so far? excluding the part where I found you.

Well, tiring and stressed, just like a usual school day to be honest.

Reletable.

A couple minutes has passed and we reached our destination, the cafeteria food line. The

line is so long, if only that guy didnt push me, I wouldve been here when it was half this size.

Keeeggaaannn! Get over here now, said one of my friends in a small group at a table

near me.

Bye Abbey I mean Abigail. Uhhh Ill see you in Culinary.

I walked away as fast as I could before I could hear her response. That was the most

awkwardest moments of my entire life. I cant believe I just embarrassed myself.

Aw, look at Keegan with his tomato face. All blushy blushy, said Kimberly, my best

friend, What made you all red like that? Huhh?

Nothing, nothing, They all stared at me like I was crazy, Really! Its nothing. Change

the subject will ya.

Whatever. I wont forget this moment

Mojica 54

Gladly, they my group of friends which consisted of Kimberly and James. My two best

friends, making Kim the closest friend compared to James. Im worrying Kim will find out about

my little crush on Abbey. Shell figure it out in no time, I just need time to last a little longer. But

time is never favorable to me, so I can only hope. Hope, hope, and hope.

I chuckled, Oh, is that annoying sound James voice again? Oh wait, its just the bell

this time.

James glared at me with his face full of sass and attitude ready to burst. All of us laughed

to ourselves and started to stand up. More than halfway to the end of school. Cant wait.
