Leader Mike Smith monitors Eastern Bluebird nest boxes at Carlisle Reservation. His boxes fledged 68
bluebirds last spring. Mike also monitors a new nest box made to attract American Kestrels. Bluebirds
and Tree Swallows were eagerly checking out boxes today. With extensive grassland habitat, Carlisle
Reservation also attracts Eastern Meadowlarks, which were singing for territory along with dozens of
Red-winged Blackbirds. Chorus Frogs and Spring Peepers made a concert in wetland forest areas along
tributaries of the Black River. Wood Duck pairs explored cavities in the large old trees. By a bridge at the
end of the walk, Eastern Phoebes called and courted.
